CAROLINE CO., VIRGINIA LAND TAX LIST:
Land tax records are available from 1782. The first list of proprietors is for 1787 and prior to then only transactions are available. In 1819 James Carnal acquires 131.5 acres from his mother Elizabeth Carnal, and from 1820 to 1824 he has 131.5 acres. I have not seen any records subsequent to 1824. James's land is said to be bounded by Vivion Wright and to be 10 miles west of the courthouse.
CAROLINE CO., VIRGINIA PERSONAL TAX LIST:
Personal tax records are available from 1783 onward. James Carnal first appears in the Caroline Co. Personal Tax List in 1797 as a tithable greater than 16 in the household of Elizabeth Carnal, his widowed mother. If he became 16 in 1797, he was born about 1781. From 1797 to 1807 there is a white male tithable in her household. That person is probably James. The list for 1808 is missing and from 1810 onward there is no such male in her household and from 1809 onward James has his own entry in the tax list. (Elizabeth for some reason is not in the list in 1809.)
In 1810 there are 3 James Carnals in the tax list. They are described as "red head", "black head" and "Bull". It is not always clear which entry refers to which James Carnal. After 1816 there is only one James Carnal in the Personal Tax List and the Land Tax List makes it clear that the James Carnal who after 1819 is the owner of 131.5 acres is the son of Elizabeth Carnal. That James Carnal is "James B. Carnal" from 1820 to 1822 in the Personal Tax List. It seems likely that "Bull" is the son of Elizabeth.
For reference the entries which probably correspond to Elizabeth's son are as follows. The columns are 1) white male tithables >16, 2) blacks >16, 3) blacks <16 and >12 (1788-1814) or blacks >12 (1815--), 4) horses/mares/colts/mules, 5) cattle, 6) amount of tax.
