General Notes: Husband - John Calvert

John Calvert is mentioned in the probate proceedings in Elbert Co., Georgia relative to David McCurdy. He must have married a daughter of David McCurdy.

John Calvert married to Mary McCurdy was a brother-in-law of Grace Appleby married to Mary's brother James McCurdy. Some people claim that John Calvert married Grace in Pope Co., Illinois after the deaths of Mary and James.

The following is from the profile of John Calvert-1157 in WikiTree:

Donald C. Jeter wrote in Marshall Co. (TN) Historical Quarterly for Summer 1973:

"John Calvert, b 1769, PA, d 1824, Pope Co., IL, m (1) 1792, Elbert Co., GA, Mary McCurdy, d before 1815, dau of David McCurdy and Agnes Weakley; m (2) Grace Appleby in Pope Co., IL, in 1815. he was listed in the 1812 Tax List of Bedford Co., TN, but was in Pope Co., IL, in 1820, when his son John W. Calvert was his agent in selling 58.5 A of land in Giles Co., TN, on Sinking Creek and Limestone Creek. Issue: Mary, b 19 Mar 1793, Elbert Co., GA, m 14 Feb 1811, Bedford Co., TN, Isaac Alred; James Morris [Calvert]; Jane McCool; Nancy Brewer; John Napoleon; George Washington, b 16 Nov 1816, IL, m 16 Feb 1840, Marshall Co., TN, Elizabeth M. Rogers; and David Carroll, b May 1818, IL, d 1900, Simpsonville, TX, m Jun 1840, Marshall Co., TN, Mary Hart."

He died before 8 Sep 1824, since on this date George H. Hanna was appointed guardian to George W. Calvert and David C. Calvert, infant heirs of John Calvert.

BIRTH YEAR:

Gilbert E. Swope in History of the Big Spring Presbyterian Church, Newville, Pa., 1737-1898 presents the membership lists prepared by Rev. Samuel Wilson about 1787-89. Members of a family are presented sequentially in descending order of age, and an asterisk by a name indicates that the person was in full communion. On page 41 for the Yellow Breeches District, whose elder was Robert Patterson, John Calvert, 20, is in a sequence of names which includes the McCurdy family. John's first wife, Mary McCurdy, is listed there as Mary Morris with no age specified. Mary's brother David McCurdy is also 20. If John and David were 20 in 1789, they were born in about 1769.

CENSUS:

This John Calvert is in the sequence John Calvert, John Hannah, James Hannah, John Calvert (001000-01000). George Hannah lives in Alexander Township.

PROBATE:

Probate records of Pope Co., Illinois at FamilySearch, "Probate Records and journals. 1819-1888", "Probate record v. A-B 1819-1838", film # 965688, pg 26, image 22/308:

On August 20, 1823 in Pope Co., Illinois, administration on the estate of John Calvert, dec'd, is granted to Gracy Calvert and William Cowan. George Hannah, Jonathan Ethridge, and James Crawford are appointed to appraise the estate.

General Notes: Wife - Mary McCurdy

AGE:

Gilbert E. Swope in History of the Big Spring Presbyterian Church, Newville, Pa., 1737-1898 presents the membership lists prepared by Rev. Samuel Wilson about 1787-89. Members of a family are presented sequentially in descending order of age. Between "James McCurdy, 25" and "David McCurdy, 20" we find "Mary Morris". She alone in her family has no specified age. It is reasonable to assume that Mary McCurdy married someone named Morris, who soon died, and that her birth date is between those of her two brothers James and David. An asterisk by her name indicates that she, like her parents and unlike her unmarried siblings, is in full communion.

SECOND HUSBAND:

John Calvert is mentioned in the probate proceedings in Elbert Co., Georgia relative to David McCurdy. Specifically, he is in a list of legatees dated 9 Feb 1797. He must have married a daughter of David McCurdy.
