CAROLINE CO. LAND TAX LIST:

Land tax records are available from 1782 onward. The first list of proprietors is for 1787 and prior to then only transactions are available. In 1803 Richmond Carnal inherits 80 acres from his father's estate and in the same year he buys 56.5 acres from Henry Goodloe. From 1804 to 1810 he has 136.5 acres. In 1811 he sells 56.5 acres to Robert Goodloe and until 1815 has 80 acres again. In 1816 he acquires 129 acres of his father's land (85 from Keziah, 24 from Pleasant and 20 from Achilles) and in 1817 he has 209 acres. It is said to be bounded by Pleasant Carnal and to be 11 miles west of the courthouse. In 1818 all 209 acres are transferred to Isbell Carnal and they remain in her name in the tax list until 1824. In 1819 Richmond acquires 70 acres from the estate of John Stevens and he has it until 1824. I have not seen any records subsequent to 1824. The 70 acre tract is said to be 15 miles west of the courthouse. I do not know what relation Isbell has to Richmond.

CAROLINE CO. PERSONAL TAX LIST:

Personal tax records are available from 1783 onward. Richmond Carnal first appears in the Caroline Co. Personal Tax List in 1789 as a tithable greater than 16 in the household of Moses Carnal, presumbly his father. If he became 16 in 1789, he was born about 1773. He remains in his father's household until 1795. He has his own entry for the first time in that same year, but only because he has 1 stud horse/jack, which is heavily taxed. From 1795 to 1821 he has an entry in the tax list. I have not seen the list for after 1826. He has a stud horse until 1800; only a few people in the county have such a horse. From 1799 to 1815 the number of slaves over 12 that he owns gradually increases from 1 to 4. After 1801 he usually has 3 horses. In 1816 and later he has fewer slaves over 12 (2 and sometimes only 1) and usually 2 horses.
