General Notes: Husband - Henry Cheatham Jr.
Henry Cheatham wrote his last will and testament June 25, 1793, and it was proved December 8, 1794. The will is in Chesterfield Co., Virginia Will Book No. 4 on page 377, and Order Book No. 10, page 564 records the probate. In the will he names his wife Mary and says that his estate is to be distributed among his children, but he does not name them. More specifically he says, "I lend unto my wife Mary Cheatham all of my estate real and personal during her life or widowhood and after her decease or mariage I desire my Estate both real and personal should be equally divided between all of my children to them and their heirs and assigns forever." The executors are George Markham, Francis Cheatham, and Elam Lockett. The witnesses are Ann Roberds and Phebe Cheatham.
An inventory of the estate of Henry Cheatham, dec'd, dated December 16, 1794 is on page 566 of Will Book No. 4. There are 2 Negroes worth £25 apiece and 73 other items including a family Bible worth £1 14/- and various books worth £3 6/6. The presence of books is unusual. It suggests that Henry was better educated than most.
