General Notes: Husband - Joseph Hinds

When Joseph was born, his parents may have still been in New Jersey or they may have already moved to North Carolina.

CENSUS:

This Joseph Hinds is Joseph III. Joseph III's father Joseph Hines (00001-00001) is 9 entries previous to this entry. Joseph III's eldest son Joseph Hynes (Joseph IV) is 9 entries away on the following page. The sequence of entries is Joseph Hines II, x, Wm. Sharp, 6x, Joseph Hinds III, 7x, Joel Bond, Joseph Hynes IV.

There are 4 Joseph Hinds in the county, so matching census entries with persons is tricky. According to the tax roll, this Joseph Hinds (Joseph III) had 2 slaves in 1810. He sometimes has 1 or none. His father (Joseph II) had no slaves in 1810 but usually has one. This census entry accounts reasonably well for the unmarried children of Joseph the son (Joseph III) who would probably have been at home with their parents in 1810.

Wm. Sharp is Joseph III's brother-in-law. Joel Bond is his son-in-law.

LAND:

In Guilford Co. Land Grants (Elizabeth Shaw Bailey, 1993) we find the following entry:

file # 158 Joseph Hinds grant 160, entry 144 16 June 1778 (entry date), 13 Nov 1779 (issue date) bk 33, pg 160 80 acres waters of Polecat

This land on Polecat Creek is in what is now Randolph County, North Carolina, which was created February 26, 1779 from the southern 1/3 of Guilford County, which in turn was formed in 1771 from Orange County on the east and Rowan County on the west.

According to the following land entry in Abstracts of Green Co., Ky Land Entries (R. N. Smith & Laura Lee Butler; 1975) Joseph Hinds entered a tract of 100 acres in May 1799 on which he had already constructed improvements. The land is in what is now Wayne Co. Wayne County was formed in 1800 from Pulaski and Cumberland, and Pulaski County was formed in 1798 from Green and Lincoln.

May 15, 1799
No. 1265 -- Joseph Hinds -- 100 acres of second rate land on the south side of Cumberland River on the first large creek below the mouth of Meadow Creek beginning at a white oak on the west side of said creek running E thence N and so around for complement to the beginning including the improvement.

The Kentucky Land Grants, Part 1, by Willard Rouse Jillson indicates that it was surveyed May 20, 1799 (Joseph Hinds, Jr., bk 9/pg 235, Green Co., Br. Cumberland R.). The Wayne Co. tax rolls indicate that it had been surveyed by 1802 and that by 1813 it has been patented.

The Joseph Hinds on the Wayne Co. tax roll in 1801 may be Joseph Jr. or it may be his cousin. Both are there in 1802. Joseph, Jr. is consistently on the tax roll until 1813 as the owner of the 100 acre tract on Meadow Creek. He is not there in 1814. The following deed clarifies his absence.

Wayne Co., Kentucky, Deed Records, Book B, pgs 270-71
Aug 1815
Grantors: Heirs and legal representatives of Joseph Hinds, Junior, dec'd
Grantee: William D. Parrish of Wayne Co.
$275 for 36 acres on Meadows Mill Creek, being part of 100 acres granted to Joseph Hinds, Jr., deceased, by patent dated 1 Apr 1811
More specifically the grantors are
1) Margaret Hinds, Widow and Relict of Joseph Hinds, Junior, deceased;
2) Benjamin Hinds,
3) George Hinds and Mary, his wife,
4) William Bond and Charity, his wife,
5) John McHenry and Margaret, his wife,
6) Joel Bond and Jane, his wife,
7) William Reese and Hannah, his wife,
all of Wayne Co.;
8) Joseph Hinds and Amey, his wife, (also spelled 'Amy')
9) Stephen Hinds and Sarah, his wife,
both of Madison County, Kentucky.

This deed was acknowledged in Madison Co. before the county clerk on September 22, 1815. It was acknowledged in Wayne Co. by Benjamin Hinds on October 18, 1815, and in Wayne Co. by the others on November 23, 1815.

If Joseph left a will, it is no longer extant. The tax rolls show George to be the owner of the complementary tract of 64 acres from 1815 to 1833, which is said to be on Fall Creek. He and his wife Mary sold it in November 1834 to John Bond. Why or how George wound up owning more than the rest is not clear.

On July 14, 1834 John McHenry purchased the 36 tract from William D. Parish and Nancy, his wife, of Adair Co., Kentucky for $275. It is said to be on Fall Creek (Bk F, pgs 380-82). See notes under John McHenry for more details.

On July 13, 1802, Joseph, Jr. purchased from his father for $100 a tract of 300 acres out of a large grant of 5000 acres on both sides of the Duck River in Maury County, Tennessee made by the State of North Carolina to his father. On August 22, 1808 Joseph Hinds, Junior of Wayne Co., Kentucky sold that tract to Joseph Wood of Jacson Co., Tennessee for $40. (Wayne Co. Deed Records, Bk A, pgs 253-55).

DEATH DATE:

Joseph was alive when his father wrote his will March 19, 1812, and he died before August, 1815, the date of the deed mentioned above.

MISSOURI:

Five of Joseph's 8 children migrated westward to Missouri. Joseph settled in Perry Co. in the southeast corner of Missouri adjacent to Kentucky. Margaret and her husband John McHenry went to Bates Co. in the far western part of the state. Benjamin and Jane, married to Joel Bond, settled in Miller Co. in the center of the state. Charity, married to William Bond, settled in Cole Co., adjacent to Miller Co. Benjamin's second cousin Benjamin also settled in Miller Co.
