JEWELLERS:
'Dubosq' appears for the first time in Philadephia city directories in 1828. There are 2 in Southwark. In 1829 there are either 3 or 4, and all but one are jewellers.
Although William Dubosq married in 1824, he is in a Philadelphia city directory for the first time in 1835-36. He is a jeweller at 298 S 5th. In 1838 he is a jeweller at 300 S 4th in one directory and at 298 S 5th in another. In 1839 William A. Dubosq is a jeweller at 5 Bank Alley and his home is at 300 S 5th. There are 7 men named Dubosq who are jewellers. Dubosq, Baton & Co., jewellers, is at 5 Bank Alley, an address which will remain until at least 1850 associated with one or another Dubosq in the jewelry trade. I have looked at Philadelphia city directory until 1850. In 1839 William's sons are not old enough to be independently in business. The other Dubosqs are presumably William's brothers, nephews or cousins.
In 1840 William A. Dubosq is a grocer and from 1841 until 1848 he is a pencil manufacturer. In 1841 and in 1842 he is at 5 Bank Alley, then at other addresses, and from 1846 onward at 2 1/2 Bank Alley. In 1846 Henry Dubosq is a jeweller at 2 1/2 Bank Alley and the firm of H. and W. Dubosq, silversmiths, is also at that address. Six Dubosqs are jewellers.
From 1844 to 1850 William A. Dubosq's home is on Swanson below Chistian. In 1849 and in 1850 William A. Dubosq is a silversmith at 2 1/2 Bank Alley where Henry Dubosq and Phillip L. Dubosq are jewellers. Dubosq and Scheer, jewellers, is at Swanson below Christian. H. and W. Dubosq, silversmiths, remains at 2 1/2 Bank Alley. Six individual Dubosqs are jewellers.
