Joel Rees signed his last will and testament December 29, 1861. He wills that his entire estate, both personal and real, be equally divided among his beloved wife Patience Rees and all of his children, namely, Eliza Bailey, wife of William H. Bailey, Martha Cole, wife of William F. Cole, Fanny B. Rees, Nancy A. Rees, Bettie W. Rees, Nathaniel Rees, John Rees, Joel Rees, and James Rees. He directs his executors to divide his slaves into lots, as nearly equal as possible, and to alot them to his wife and children. The remainder of his estate is to be sold and the proceeds are to be shared equally among his wife and children. He directs the executors to make sure that his wife is satisfactorily provided for. He makes a special legacy of $50 to his beloved daughter Eliza Bailey. He directs the executors to present the sum of $50 to his beloved friend Dr. Isham G. Baily as a keepsake. He appoints William H. Rees and Dempsey Sullivan as executors.

This will was proved by the subscribing witnesses at the January and February 1862 terms of the Court and ordered to be recorded August 13, 1866.
