In 1870 Nancy Grinstead (75, Va, $800/$150, blind) is living in Barren Co., Kentucky in the household of her son James W. Grinstead.

SONS and WAGON MAKING:

James's half brother William, born in 1802, was a wagon maker. John and Reuben, born in 1815 and in 1817 respectively, were also wagon makers. They are too old to be sons of William. Census slots are available for them as sons of James, and as such they would be nephews of William.

The Times of Long Ago, Barren County, Kentucky by Franklin Gorin was published as a book in 1929 and was based on material that appeared in 1876 in the "Glasgow Times". On page 85:

"Henry Grinstead was the first wagon maker in Glasgow. Wm. Grinstead was the next, who carried on the business for many years. They were excellent workmen and citizens. Reuben Grinstead, Wm. Potter, J. W. and Henry Grinstead learned the business with Wm. Grinstead, and worked with him."

The elder Henry Grinstead was Jesse's son and hence a first cousin of William Grinstead. The younger Henry was the youngest son of the elder Henry and probably learned wagon making from his father, although he may have worked with William. James's youngest son James Willis was a farmer according to the census. The J. W. in the quote is probably John Grinstead (Reuben's brother). Note that Joseph Grinstead, another son of the elder Henry Grinstead, was a wheelwright.
