General Notes: Husband - Tyrance Emerson
The following is in a biographical sketch of William Hinkle, the eldest son of Tyrance Emerson's wife Ann.
"For her second husband the mother of our subject wedded Tyrance Emerson, by whom she had five children. Her death also occurred in Tennessee, in the fall of 1855, at the age of fifty years."

He is in the sequence Turence Emerson, x, Wm Beckam, 7x, Wm Hinkle. In 1830 Ann Downing was a widow in the household of her father. She remarried after 1830. Presumably the father of the 4 older children is her first husband Baltis Hinkle, and the father of the 3 younger children is her present husband.

NAME:
The name 'Tyrance' occurs once, in a biographical sketch of his wife's son William Hinkle, published in 1896. No one in the United States in the 1850 census is named 'Tyrance'. Tyrance Emerson's name was probably 'Terence'.
EMERSON CHILDREN:
In 1860 James K. P. Emerson (20, Tn, Tanners Apprentice) is living in Wayne Co. with A. P. Downing, and Andrew Emerson (15, Tn, Farm laborer) is living in Wayne Co. with J. J. Downing. It seems obvious that they are Ann's children by her second husband.
In 1850 Ann Emerson and her sons are not in the census. Mary E. Emmerson (15, Tn) is living in Hardin Co., Tennessee in the household of James L. Smith (44, farmer). Mary is the right age to be the female < 5 in the 1840 census entry for Turence Emerson in Wayne Co. Mary married William H. Polk, and in 1860, Josiah D. Emison (27, Tn) is in their household. The presence of Josiah makes it very likely that Mary really is the daughter of Tyrance Emerson and Ann Downing. Josiah, then, is the son 5-10 in the 1840 census entry for Turence Emerson. Wayne and Hardin are adjoining counties.
General Notes: Wife - Ann Downing
The following is in a biographical sketch of Ann's eldest son William Hinkle.
By trade the father of our subject was a carpenter. He died in Alabama when our subject was about six years old, at the age of thirty years. William was the oldest in the family of five children, the others being John, Alexander, Catherine and Baltis; but himself and John are the only ones now living. After the death of Mr. Hinkle his widow returned to the home of her parents, Andrew and Elizabeth (Jones) Downing, whose children were: Mary, John, Catherine, Annie, William, James, Sarah and Jonathan. Mr. Downing died in Tennessee, in 1844, at the ripe old age of seventy-eight years. For her second husband the mother of our subject wedded Tyrance Emerson, by whom she had five children. Her death also occurred in Tennessee, in the fall of 1855, at the age of fifty years.
