Sara Jane Goodin was the daughter of Elizabeth Smith and Samuel P. Goodin. She was adopted by her husband's uncle Gerron Hinds and his wife Margaret, who had no children of their own. Elizabeth was Margaret's sister, so Gerron adopted his wife's niece. If she had been Gerron's natural child, then she would have married her first cousin, but in fact she was genetically unrelated to him.
