BIRTH YEAR and PERSONAL PROPERTY TAX LISTS:

The 1830 and 1840 censuses indicate that James was born between 1780 and 1790. He first appears in the Culpeper Co. Personal Property Tax List in 1813 and is there until 1822 (I have not seen anything past 1823). In 1821 and in 1822 he is in an entry entitled "Wm. & James Hitt". From 1813 to 1820 he has no slaves and either 1 horse or no horse. From 1803 to 1804 and from 1811 to 1812 (1805-10 are missing) James's father Joseph Hitt has 2 tithables in his household. I have conjectured that the additional tithable in 1803 and in 1804 is James's brother William. The additional tithable in 1811 and in 1812 is probably James. If he had been born in 1790 he would have become 16 and thus tithable in 1806. There are 2 districts in the county and James is always in the same district (Daniel Brown) as his father.

LAND in CULPEPER CO.:

On September 23, 1818 Thompson Utterback and Elizabeth, his wife, of Culpeper Co. sold to William and James Hitt of the same county for $1265 a tract of 115 acres in Culpeper Co. on Bullocks Run. It is described by metes and bounds and adjoins Boughan, James Utterback, Brown, Coleman's old corner now Brown's. (Culpeper Co. Deed Records KK/132)

On March 5, 1824 Leroy Kilby and Eleaner, his wife, of Culpeper Co. sold to James Hitt, Senr. and Willis Reynolds of the same county for $80 a tract of 17 acres being part of the dower land assigned to Eleaner Marye, dec'd, widow of Peter Marye, dec'd. It adjoins land already owned by Reynolds. (QQ/436)

From 1821 to 1829 (the last year for which I have seen the list) William and James Hitt jointly own 115 acres adjacent to Thomas C. Brown in Daniel Brown's district about 11 miles west of the courthouse. In 1826 after his father's death he does not have any additional land; unlike his brothers Joseph and William he appears not to have inherited any land from his father.

On September 20, 1837 James Hitt and Frances, his wife, of Culpeper Co. sells to Joel Hitt of the same county for $1070 3 tracts in Culpeper Co.: 1) a tract of 43 3/4 acres on Buttocks [sic] Branch adjoining Presley Brown and Joseph Sibert where James Hitt's house is situated, 2) 57 acres also on Buttock's Run and adjoining William Hitt and 3) 65.5 acres adjoining tract 2) and sold by Thomas C. Brown to Joel Hitt and then sold by Joel Hitt to James Hitt. (4/8)

On August 19, 1842 James Hitt and Frances, his wife, of Culpeper Co. sold to Gilly Munday of the same place for $8 a tract of 1 3/4 acres. The description begins "at a locust near the spring belonging to the said Gilly Munday now used for the family" and refers to Gilly Munday's line as "her line". (6/138) On August 23, 1842 James Hitt bought for $8 a tract of 1 1/3 acres near the same spring from John Reynolds and his wife Elizabeth. (6/137)

MILITARY SERVICE:

In the "War of 1812 Service Records" database on ancestry.com there is a James Hitt who was a private in Ballowe's 2nd Regiment of Virginia Militia. Which James Hitt is he -- James, son of Joseph (Peter, Joseph, Joseph), or James, son of John (Peter, John, John)? William Hitt, also a son of Joseph, was in the 2nd regiment according to his widow's application for a pension. William's nephew John Hitt (son of Joseph III) was in the company of Capt. John Thom/Thorn, which was in the 2nd regiment. Hence it seems likely that the James in the 2nd regiment is Joseph's son James rather than his second cousin James W. Hitt, son of John.

EARL J. HITT:

The following was copied from the database of Earl J. Hitt in WorldConnect (no longer existent):

The county paid James Hitt for 90 hours of patrolling in May 1810 and for 136 hours in June 1811 (Minute Book 6-182, p. 397).
