I cannot find him in the census in 1870 and later. In the "Roster of Confederate Soldiers" there is a sergeant named Marshall B. Hitt in the 3rd Mississippi Infantry, Co. D. It seems likely that this Marshall B. Hitt was Charles Hitt's son and that he was killed in the war.
