Joel Martin, said to have married Mary Hitt, is mentioned on page 417 in GERMANNA RECORD # 5, Ancestry and Descendants of the Nassau-Siegen Immigrants to Virginia 1714-1750 by B. C. Holtsclaw in Chapter 17 on the Martin family. Joel is said to probably be a son of Jacob Martin.
Jeffrey Phillips, a Martin descendant and a Hitt descendant (apart from Mary Hitt) says that Joel was a son of Tilman Martin.
General Notes: Wife - Mary Ann Hitt
The story of Mary Ann Hitt and her three husbands can be found on pages 184-89 in The Border Settlers of Northwestern Virginia from 1768 to 1795 by Lucullus Virgil McWhorter and published in 1915. It is available on the internet. Some excerpts follow:
Joseph Hall was educated in advance of those around him, and was useful in imparting knowledge to his neighbors. He died in 1825.
In January 1796, Joseph Hall married Ann Strange, nee Hitt. Tragedy had twice widowed this woman. Her first husband, Joel Martin, a soldier of the Revolution, died at the siege of Yorktown, 1781. Her second husband, William Strange, was lost on a surveying expedition in the mountains and his skeleton only found a great many years afterward.
Mrs. Hall, nee Hitt, was an estimable woman, and her married life with Mr Joseph Hall was ideal. She died in 1810 leaving two children by her last husband; Jonathan, born November 8, 1797, and David, born March 4, 1800. They inherited their father's estate on Skin Creek.
William Strange was born in Fauquier County, Virginia. His children were:
Eliza, born September 22, 1784; James, born October 18, 1787; John, born November 15, 1789; Sarah, born July 26, 1792, married Enoch Hall, of the Elk Creek family of Halls; Margaret, born July 11th, 1794.
The story [of William Strange's death] was told Mr. Heavner by his mother, Mary, whose step-grandfather was Mr. Strange. She was the oldest child of Stephen, son of Joel Martin who died at Yorktown. Joel was not a regular enlisted solder but when Virginia was invaded by the British under Gen. Cornwallis, he took his gun and went out with the patriot troops, never to return. His brother William was an enlisted soldier in the Revolution, and is said to have been killed at the siege of Yorktown. Joel Martin left two children, Joel, born July 26, 1778, Stephen, born April 14, 1781. Stephen never saw his father.
WHO WAS HER FATHER?
I have assigned her to John, but I am not aware of any evidence that makes it more likely that John was her father than Joseph.
