OBITUARY:
At Find-a-Grave Memorial #112001107 from an unknown newspaper:
In Memorium.
John Downing, sen., was born in Chester county, South Carolina, December 7th, 1776, died May 11th, 1870, at the advanced age of 93 years, 5 months and 4 days.
He was one of the earliest pioneer settlers of the country, having emigrated from South Carolina in the spring of 1813, to Bourbon county, Kentucky. After remaining there till the spring of 1815, himself and family struck out again northward and came to Preble county, Ohio, where he stopped temporarily at the then small settlement of New Paris. In a short time afterward he came to Darke county, and settled permanently three miles west of New Madison, entering a section of wild, or Congress land, on a part of which he lived till his death.
