In 1860 Joel (20, Ky) is a farm laborer in the household of John F. Emorine at 302/299 in Madison Co., p.o. Elliston. His older brother Smith is at 301/298. John F. Emorine is a relative of M. D. Grinstead's wife Eliza.

His brother George T. and his cousin Wesley also served in the 8th Infantry.
According to "Official Army Register of the Volunteer Force of the United States Army 1861--1865", Volume IV, the Eighth Infantry Regiment was organized at Camp Dick Robinson and Lebanon, Kentucky from October 1, 1861 to January 25, 1862 to serve three years. It was consolidated into a battalion of 5 companies in January 1864 and retained in service until November 17, 1864 when it was mustered out by reason of expiration of term of service.
