There he married "Fanny" Potter. During the War of 1812, his military service was in the Indiana Territory (see War Record #18693). In the spring of 1834, Richard brought his entire family to Jennings County, Indiana so that he could supervise the laying of the rails on the new railway fron Indianapolis to Madison. In 1849, he along with Edward Walton, Susan, Jasper, and William moved on to Davis County, Iowa. In 1867, John H. moved to Scotland County, Missouri.
"Fanny died in Iowa in 1860, and in 1869, Richard, in failing health and almost blind, came back to Jennings County, IN to live with his son Lewis Potter Grinstead, until the latter's death in February of 1875. Richard spent the final two months of his life in the home of his daughter, Betsy and her husband James King. There were eleven children: William, Lewis Potter, Sarah Ann, John H., Edward Walton, Elizabeth (Betsy), Richard Horman, Susan, Daniel, Thomas, and Jasper Grinstead."

Dear Nephew,
I will try to give you a biography of our ancestors. On our father's side, we were formerly from England before the Revolutionary War. Your Great Great Grandfather Richard Grinstead was born near Richmond, Virginia in the 1780's and lived in that State until near 1800. He with his 2 brothers moved to Barren and Warren counties Ky. His wife's maiden name was Frances Potter (I think of Penn Dutch decent). I would say my grandfather was of sanguin temperment, fair complected, six feet high in his sox feet, weighing about 175 to 190 lbs, for his day quite an athlete, a graceful mover, a fine walker, a good citizen, a good singer, and a great whistler. He was a lover of children, and we were always glad to have him come to our house. I will add he had very little education.
His wife, Frances, was a short built woman, heavy boned and stout, of a limfatic temperament, with a good education for her day. She was one of the best obstetric doctors in Iowa, well posted in her profession. She, I think, was about 4 ft high, of a rather dark complexion, could not sing a tune.
Now you can readily see from what I have said that grandfather and grandmother were very different mentally and physically and opposite to each other in most respects. I think they lived very peacefully together. Their children, which consisted of 5 boys and 3 girls, some of them so much different from each other as their parents were different."
"In 1849 grandfather and father's family (consisting of 3 children by 1st wife and 2 by second wife) embarked on a boat on the Ohio River for Keokuk, IA. We landed at Keokuk on the 3rd day of April 1849. I think at least 2 of grandfather's sons came, at least Uncle Jasper, but he did not stay there long but went back to Ind. Father rode horseback and led another. I do not know if he started the same time we left on the boat or not."

MILITARY RECORDS

Source: Summary of Xerox copies of the file of Richard Grinstead in application for a pension for service in the War of 1812, filed in June, 1871, in possession of Maridell Fryar, Midland, TX. (File Designation "Richard Grinstead S. O. 18963 1812" - National Archives)

Richard Grinstead of North Vernon, Jennings County, Indiana who served in Capt. William's Company of the Kentucky Volunteers from Nov. 3 1811 to Decemer 1812 applied for a pension. The application was rejected on June 8, 1872 "by reason of insufficient service." Notation from the Treasury Depatment establishes that Richard Grinstead served from 18n September, 1812 to 30 October 1812 and 10 days of travel.

In the Declaration of Soldier for Pension, filed in Jennings County, Indiana on May 19, 1871, Richard Grinstead, aged 82, declares that he is married to Francis Potter and was married at Bowlin Green, Warren County, Ky on the 18th day of April 1810 and that he served sixty days as a private in Captain Williams company during the War of 1812 and was honorably discharged at Shaker Town Big Buss Row Ind. in December, 1812 that the Regiment he was in went to Fort Harrison to release General Taylor from the siege made by the Indians and was there some 3 or 4 days. The Regiment was commanded by Col. Ewing. When paid off the Pay Master took my receipt for discharge and it may be on file in the pension office.

A handwritten affidavit executed April 10 1873 indicates that Richard Grinstead, aged 82 years and eleven months and a resident of Jennings County, Indiana declares that he is not now a married man, his wife having died in the State of Iowa in the year 1860. He summarizes again his service and indicates that he received a Land Warrant for service about 1855. He states that his Post Office is Brewer's Mill, Jennings County, Indiana and that he now resides with his son Lewis P. Grinstead near that office. There is also notation that he is blind and that witnesses attest to his making his mark to the document.

His pay slips are included which indicate service from Sept. 18 to Oct 30, 1812.

Bounty Land Claim application was issued in Iowa, Davis County, on the 29 November 1850 and signed by Richard Grinstead.
