"Richard H. served in the Civil War."

Source: Excerpt of a letter written in April 18, 1921 from Santa Ana, Calif. by Calvin Smith Grinstead "one of John L. N. Grinstead's grandfather's half-brothers, the oldest in my great-grandfather's family by his second wife "

"I will give you a little idea of father's brother Richard and his family. He was younger than my father, but was a man about my father's size. They had 8 children about the ages of our family. They all lived to be grown. Uncle was a fine singer and would sing to us when he came to see us. His family were good singers, with common education, and take it in all ways not so much different from our family."
