Retired Army Officer Dead
Last rites for Silas C. Grinstead age fifty-six, Southport, mail carrier and retired army officer, will be held at 3:30 p.m. Friday in the G. H. Herrmann funeral home. The Rev. George A. Frantz, pastor of First Presbyterian church, will officiate. Burial will be in Crown Hill cemetery.
Mr. Grinstead died Wednesday at Methodist Hospital after seven weeks' illness. He had been a mail carrier on the south side of Indianapolis since he came here in 1926 following his retirement from the army. He had served continuously in the army from January, 1901 to June, 1925.
He was stationed in the Philippines from November, 1903 to October, 1905 and in Cuba from October, 1906 to February, 1909. He was commissioned a first lieutenant during the world war, being assigned to training camps in this country through the war. He spent the years following the war at Ft. Benning, Georgia. At Ft. Benning he belonged to the Sons of the American Revolution, the Scottish Rite and Columbian Masonic Lodge. He was retired in 1925 at Ft. Benning.
Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Martha Grinstead; a daughter, Miss Thelma Lorraine Grinstead, and two sons, Silas C. Grinstead and Benjamin F. Grinstead, Southport.
