In June 1874 Sally Waddle [mother of Elizabeth A. Hinds] and Martha Davis state that they were well acquainted with John and Elizabeth A. Hinds and that they were present at the birth of all of their children. They are

Sarah F. born February 2, 1862
James H. born May 9, 1864
Mary E. born March 11, 1867
Wm. P. born March 15, 1870

A transcript of the family Bible has the following entries:

Galen E. Hinds born July 18, 1854
Mariah J. Hinds born January 16, 1856

Jmes H. Hinds born May 9, 1864
Mary E. Hinds born March 11, 1867
William P. Hinds born March 19, 1870

The birth dates of the children in the two sources are not entirely consistent.

There are numerous affidavits in the pension file concerning the health of John Hinds. He died of consumption. The general picture painted by the affiants is that he was a healthy man when he enlisted in the army, that he became sick while in the army, that he came home in the spring of 1864 and stayed there about 6 weeks, that he then returned to his regiment, that after returning he was not able or fit for duty and that after he was discharged he was never in good health again and his capacity to work was very limited.

A neighbor, F. H. Vickery, stated on July 27, 1886 "that I have been well and personally acquainted with John Hinds for 30 years and that the said soldier was an apprentice in the tan business under my father, and I worked with him in the tan-yard before the war, and that he was a healthy boy, and completed his trade, and was in good health when he enlisted in the army. We both worked together, and completed our trades."

Wm. T. Hail, M.D. stated on July 21, 1876 "that some time during the term of service of John Hinds in the United States Army, the date he does not remember, said Hinds came home on sick furlow and remained to the best of his recollection about two weeks. When he came home he was afflicted very badly with cold, which had settled upon his lungs. When his furlow expired he went back to his command there at Point Burnsides, about 6 miles from his home, under the protest of this affiant, because while he was at home affiant visited him, and knew he was not able to return to the service. Affiant was well acquainted with said Hinds from this time until the date of his death and knows that he was never well afterwards. Affiant waited upon decease a great deal from the time he came home on sick furlow as above, until his death, and having been well acquainted with him before this time know that the disease of which he died originated in the army and from all the simptoms originated from exposure. The disease's lungs became seriously effected by reason of cold having settled upon them, and he continued to grow worse until it assumed a consumptive form, and he continued to grow worse with the same disease until his death. Affiant knew him well before and at the time he entered the service and from appearances he was a sound man, and showed no signs of disease until he came home on sick furlow as above."

Isaac L. Hardgrove was the captain of Company I. The following statement was made April 21, 1883:

"above named ISace L. Hardgrove age years (65) affiant makes the falowen Statementes he was Captin of Campaney I 49 Ky infantrey and John Hindes Enlisted in his Campaney to Serve one year and at the time of Said John Hindes Enlistement he was a Sound able boddayed man appearantley He was Examined at Campe nelson Kentuckey by aboard of Examiners Doctors and recieved in to the Surves of the united States as a Soaldier and Survid in affiants Companey Some 16 monthes and Said John Hindes Had a Spell of Sicknes said to bee feaver after havin feaver He apearentley never was well and never dun but little dutey in the campaney Camplained of benge not able ________ in the Servis aboute Sixteen monthes then Discharged . . .

At least one affiant claimed that John Hinds became ill at home after he went home on leave.

Elizabeth A. Hinds was granted a pension of $8/month commencing June 3, 1872 and $2/month for each of her youngest 5 children commencing the same date until arriving at the age of 16.

Sophronia V. born May 1, 1858 sixteen on Apl 30, 1874
Sarah F. born Feb 2, 1862 sixteen on Feb 1, 1878
James H. born May 9, 1864 sixteen on May 8, 1880
Mary E. born Mar 11, 1967 sixteen on Mar 10, 1883
William P. born Mar 19, 1870 sixteen on Mar 18, 1886

Commencing September 8, 1916 Elizabeth Hinds became entitled to $20/month. She died on August 21, 1917 at which time her post office address was Alcalde, Kentucky.

[death date on tombstone is 23 Aug 1917]

BIRTH DATE:

According to a transcript of John Hinds's family Bible in the application of his widow for a pension, he was born July 25, 1832. That date conflicts with the birth date of his brother James S. Hinds recorded on his tombstone. I conjecture that John Hinds was born July 25, 1834. 1834 is compatible with the census.

BURIAL:

John R. Hinds and his third cousin once removed James Hinds were both in Company I of the 49th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry. James died in 1863 and John died in 1872. Their graves are side by side in the Keeney Cemetery in Pulaski Co. The two headstones are very similar and have only the name (James Hinds/Jno. Hinds) with the company and regiment. They were supplied by Sheldon and Sons by contract dated July 8, 1887.
