Notes
General:
CALDWELL COUNTY:

An article about Levi Hinds (born in North Carolina in 1766) and his children in "Historical Caldwell County" says, "Another son, Levi S. Hinds, born 1810, and his wife, Nancy Ford, joined the rest of the family in Gonzales. He died in 1841." Gonzales is in Gonzales Co., Texas, which adjoins Caldwell Co. The widow later remarried in Pulaski Co., Kentucky.

TEXASGEN:

The following is from http://www.texasgen.org/. Click on 'Narratives' and then on 'Cornelius Smith'.

The HINDS family arrived in Texas at different times based on the 1838 report of the Board of Land Commissioners of Brazoria County. Gerren's brother Thomas Shelton HINDS arrived prior to March 2, 1836. Gerren's father, Levi Jr., brothers Levi S. and Eli "Clem" Clement, arrived after March 2, 1836 but before October 1, 1837. Based on the class and amount of land allowed, Clem, age 17, was the only one who was not married. Gerren's brother, Levi S., may have returned to Kentucky. Some Hinds researchers reflect that Levi never migrated to Texas.

MATTHEW HINDS STORY:

In "The Green Hills of Kentucky Hold the Matthew Hinds Story" Karen Hines says that Matthew was the fourth child of Levi Hinds and Nancy Ida Ford and that he was born 11 November 1837 in Gonzales or Brazoria Co., Texas. After his father was killed by Indians, his mother returned to Kentucky with her children, where she first lived with her father John Ford in the SW corner of Pulaski Co. and then married William Jasper, who lived in the NW corner near Casey Co.

DEATH:

The probate proceedings relative to Levi Hinds who died August 7, 1838 in Brazoria Co., Texas suggest that his son Levi was still alive in September 1838. The 1850 census indicates that Levi's son Ezekiel was born in 1841 and the 1860 census indicates 1842. That data suggests that Levi was still alive as late as 1840.

"The Hinds Family" by Bernice Smith West in Blanco County News, March 26, 2008 says that Levi Hinds died November 23, 1837. She offers no evidence for that date. See notes under Eli Clemmons Hinds for her article.
