Ben P. Hines, 88, former Pulaski County sheriff and deputy federal marshal, died Saturday night at the Somerset City Hospital after a year's illness.
A life long resident of Pulaski County, he was born June 3, 1873, the son of Samuel and Jane Waddle Hines. On December 16, 1897 he married Lelia Ellen Elrod and to this union seven children were born.
Mrs. Hines and one son, Dr. W.E. Hines, preceded him in death.
In the 1920's and early 1930's he was stationed here as a deputy marshal for Easter Kentucky. He was elected sheriff in 1902 and again in the 1920's. Before final retirement in 1940, he ran a general insurance agency for several years. He was an active member of the First Methodist Church as long as his health permitted.
Survivors include five sons, Ben Hines, II, Atlanta, Arthur J. Hines, Oak Ridge, Tenn., and Edwin Bill, and Joe R. Hines, Sr., all of Somerset; a daughter, Mrs. Helen Burgin, Dayton, Ohio; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the First Methodist Church with the Rev. Warner P. Davis and the Rev. Lee Davis Fisher officiating. Burial was in the Somerset City Cemetery.
Pulaski Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
