RLH:

The following is from a research article about John Balthasar Hinkle and his children. It was sent to me by Robert L. Hess of Oakland, California, a descendent of John Balthasar. Numbers in brackets indicate notes which follow. See also page 1455 of the HENCKEL GENEALOGICAL BULLETIN.

Anna Margret (Rebecca[1]) Henckel, born 3 May 1762[21] probably at Germantown. She resided with her parents and moved with them to Frederick County, Maryland, in the late 1760s. Anna Margret was confirmed on 13 May 1779, at age seventeen, in the Lutheran Church at Frederick.[21] On 4 Apr 1784 she married Casper Rhein[9] (Rhine[22]); witnesses at the marriage were her brothers Jesse and John Hinkle[9] She and Casper remained in the vicinity of Frederick,[15] where they had eight children.[19] "Rebecca" (Hinckel), wife of Casper Rhein, died in childbirth with their ninth child, 16 Feb 1802.[19]

NOTES

1. Here is one more documented case in which a German-American female was named and called Margaret during the early part of her life[21,22] but was called Rebecca when she was buried.[19] The reason: these German families used English nicknames for their children, and their pronunciation for "Peggy," for Margaret, was audibly indistinguishable from "Becky," for Rebecca.

4 Apr 1784, Margreth Hinckel married Caspar Rhein (witnessed by Jesse and John Hinckle).

15. U.S. Census, Frederick County, Maryland; 1790:
Casper Rine: 1 male over 16, 1 under 16; 3 females.

19. Register of the Lutheran church at Frederick, Maryland (as translated by F.S. Weiser in "Records of Marriages and Burials in ... the Evangelical Lutheran Congregation in the City of Frederick, Maryland 1743-1811"); under burials:
16 Feb 1802, was buried Rebecca, née Hinkel, wife of Mr. Casper Rein, with whom she ... had 8 children ... Age 40 years [hence born in 1762). She died in childbirth with her 9th child ...
