LAND in TENNESSEE:
On November 6, 1845 Jesse Hinkle and John D. Hinkle purchased a tract of about 160 acres in Wayne Co., Tennessee, District 7, from their father William Hinkle for $1300. A metes and bounds description is based on an entry in the name of Lewis Folkner. (Deed Book F, pg 153) Also on November 6, 1845 they purchased for $1300 another tract of about 160 acres in Wayne Co. from William Hawk. It borders on the lands of Lewis Falkner and William Bentley. (F/153-54)
On October 31, 1850 Jesse Hinkle and John D. Hinkle sold 4 tracts in Wayne Co., District 7, containing a total of 320 acres to Sarah Roberts and Thomas J. Roberts for $2000. (H/12-14) These tracts are 1) 160 acres bordering Lewis Falkner, 2) 21 acres bordering John S. Ingram, 3) 134 acres bordering W. Hinkle, excluding entries in the name of Leonard Beckham, which was conveyed to Phillip Rose, and 4) 5 acres bordering J. S. Ingram and Leonard Beckham.
ARRIVAL IN ARKANSAS:
The land purchases in 1845 suggest that Jesse Hinkle and his brother John D. did not at that time anticipate going to Arkansas, but by 1850 they had decided to join their father and several siblings in Izard Co. They probably left Tennessee not long after their land sale of October 31, 1850. It would be reasonable to harvest in the old location in the fall, move in the winter, and be ready to plant in the spring in a new location. According to the 1900 census Jesse's daughter Francis Tennessee was born April, 1851, and she said 5 times in the census between 1870 and 1920 that she was born in Arkansas. Jesse is on the Izard Co. tax roll for the first time in 1853. He owns no land in 1853, but subsequently he is a landowner. There is a tax roll for 1848, but those for 1849-52 have been lost. His younger brother John D. left Tennessee and came to Arkansas about the same time. They probably came together. Their father William was already in Izard Co by 1846.
The biographical sketch under his nephew John A. Hinkle suggests that Jesse was a merchant in Lunenburg in the 1870's.
LAND in ARKANSAS:
Between March 1, 1855 and June 16, 1856 400 contiguous acres in Sections 25, 26, and 36 of T16N R9W in Izard Co., Arkansas were patented to Jesse Hinkle. Later on July 1, 1859 another 40 acres in T18N R10W were patented to him.
Between March 1, 1855 and March 1, 1856 80 acres in Section 24 were patented to his brother John D. Hinkle, and on March 1, 1855 another 40 acres in an adjoining township contiguous to the 80 were patented to John D.'s wife Arena. Jesse and John D. were about 4 miles apart.
In the same time period their father and younger brother Andrew patented land about 12 miles away in T14N R10W.
