He is not in the Slave Schedule. Arena Taylor is John D. Hinkle's widow. The 1870 census makes it clear that the surname of the 3 youngest children is Taylor. John A. is the youngest Hinkle child.

In 1870 John A. (17, Ar, works on farm) is still in the household of Stephen (59, NC) and Arrenia (42, Tn) Taylor. Also in that household is James M. Hinkle (21, Tn, works on farm). Although Joshua W. C. is in Izard Co. in 1880 and in 1900, he is not findable anywhere in 1870. Thus I suspect that James M. is in fact Joshua W. C., although the names are wildly different.

In 1880 John A. (27, Ar Tn Tn) is a merchant living in Melbourne with his wife and a cousin, who is also a merchant.

DEATH DATE:

John D. is not on the tax roll for 1853, but Irena is. "John Estate" appears for 1858. Records exist only for 1846, 47, 48, 53, 58, 59, 61 in the period 1846-61.

ARRIVAL IN ARKANSAS:

The census indicates that John D. was in Tennessee October 16, 1850, and on October 31 he and his older brother Jesse sold 4 tracts of land. He probably came to Arkansas shortly thereafter. Jesse came about the same time. They probably came together. Their father William was already in Izard Co. by 1846.

JOHN D.'s MIDDLE NAME:

Since his mother was Sarah Downing, it is quite probable that his middle name was Downing, but I have not seen any documentary evidence. It might have been David or Daniel.
