BEDFORD CO., TENNESSEE:
On December 30, 1812 David Sanders of Bedford Co., Tennessee sells to Agness Appleby of Maury Co., Tennessee for $56.50 a tract of 45 acres in Bedford Co. in the Second District on the waters of Rock Creek on the south side of Duck River. Witnesses are Alen Leeper, James L. Ewing, and David Appleby. The deed was proved in open court by the oaths of Allen Leeper and David Appleby and certified for registration September 25, 1813. On December 30, 1818 Agness Appleby of Bedford Co. sells to David Appleby of the same county for $200 the same 45 acres. (M11, film # 476353, image 750/1474)
On January 21, 1819 William Legget of Maury Co., Tennessee sells to John Appleby of Bedford Co., Tennessee for $200 a tract of 47 acres, more or less, in Bedford Co. on the south side of Duck River and on the waters of the west fork of Rock Creek. The metes and bounds description begins at the NE corner of Lot No 2. Witnesses are Jas Ewing and Allen Leeper. The deed was proved in open court by the oaths of the two witnesses October 15, 1819. (L309, film # 476353, image 617/1474)
The 1850 census says that David Appleby's oldest child was born in Tennessee. It seems likely that she and all the other children were born in Bedford Co.
ARRIVAL IN MISSOURI:
The following obituary in the Springfield, Missouri Weekly Patriot Newspaper, Thursday, 24 Oct 1867 is copied from the Appleby Association website at http://appleby.rootsweb.com. See that website for a picture of David Appleby, a copy of his will, and further information.
"Died, October 15th, in the 80th year of his age. Mr. David Appleby. He had lived 34 years on the place which he died; 7 miles north of this city. For 32 years he was an elder in the Presbyterian Church and was one our oldest and most respected citizens."
Another obituary which can be seen at the same website (click on 'Missouri Index' and then on 'Missouri Obituaries') is for Judge A. B. Appleby, 72, who died October 26, 1920 in his home, Pine Lawn Farm, five miles northeast of Springfield. He was born on that farm, which his grandfather, David A. Appleby, homesteaded in 1834.
Both obituaries indicate that David Appleby was in Greene Co., Missouri by 1834.
PROBATE:
Missouri Probate Records, 1750-1998, Greene Co.,
"Wills, 1840-1883, vol A-B", film # 940643, Vol A, pg 468, image 246/742 at familysearch.org:
David Appleby wrote his will August 9, 1867.
To his daughter Margaret Araminta Appleby he bequeaths all his household and kitchen furniture, two choice cows, 6 sheep, all the grain, forage, and provisions that may be on hand, the bay mare, the sorrel colt, one half of the hogs, and all the money that he may be possessed of at the time of his death. He also bequeaths to her a specific 40 acre tract that includes the dwelling house, spring, and apple orchard.
To his granddaughter Mary Dryden Appleby he bequeaths one horse worth fifty dollars, one cow, and her support while she remains in the family.
To his grandson Albert B. Appleby he bequeaths one acre of land which is to include the spring and the watering place where his mother and family get their water.
He reserves one forth of an acre including his wife's and daughter's graves never to be sold or transferred.
All other property not named above is to be sold or divided as the interested parties may agree upon and the proceeds to be equally divided among his living children except that the portion that would have fallen to his son John E.[sic] Appleby is to be paid to his wife M. Jane Appleby and her five cildren and the portion that would have fallen to his deceased daughter Ann Amanda Gregory is to be paid to her 3 daughters Sarah M., Susan E., and Margaret E. Gregory.
He names his son James N. Appleby to be the executor.
The will was proved November 4, 1867.
MCCURDY and APPLEBY INTERMARRIAGES:
William McCurdy and David Appleby each had six children. Three of William McCurdy's children (Thomas S., James P., and Mary Elizabeth) married three of David Appleby's (Nancy M., Sarah M., and James Newton, respectively). All three weddings took place in Greene Co., Missouri. William McCurdy's parents were David McCurdy and Elizabeth Appleby. Elizabeth's sister Grissy married David's brother James. Those marriages took place in Cumberland Co., Pennsylvania.
The parents of Elizabeth and Grissy were William Appleby and Elizabeth McKeehan. The second wife of that William Appleby was Nancy (Agnes) McCurdy, an older sister of David McCurdy, so that William Appleby was simultaneously David's father-in-law and brother-in-law. David Appleby was a son of Nancy McCurdy and William Appleby, and William McCurdy was a son of Nancy's brother David McCurdy and Elizabeth Appleby, so that David Appleby and William McCurdy were first cousins in the McCurdy line. William McCurdy's mother was a half-sister of David Appleby, so that David Appleby was William McCurdy's half uncle in the Appleby line. Thus the three marriages first mentioned above were between second cousins in the McCurdy line and between first half-cousins once removed in the Appleby line.
Another intermarriage occurred in Washington County, Arkansas about 1837. William McCurdy's eldest son David E. McCurdy probably married Louisa Jane Appleby, a daughter of Hezekiah Appleby.
