The following is from an article by Robert L. Hess in the HENCKEL GENEALOGICAL BULLETIN (Vol 33, No 2, Fall 2002) entitled "Jacob Hinkle of Spread Eagle Tavern". Numbers in brackets indicate notes which follow.

7. William Hinkle[7] was born about 1776-1780.[8] He moved with his parents to Frederick County, Maryland about 1780, and to Lincoln County, North Carolina in 1784/5. Prior to 1801 he married Jane White, a daughter of Hugh and Elizabeth White of Chester County, South Carolina.[9] They had ten children, born between 1799 and 1819.[10]

William and Jane moved to York County, South Carolina, where in 1803 he bought 38 acres of land on Fishing Creek.[1] In 1805 William bought 140 acres of land in Lincoln County, North Carolina,[2] and about that time he and Jane moved there. He appears here in 1810 and 1820 residing near [his brother] Jacob Hinkle and [his mother] Widow Christina Hinkle.[3] William bought 145¾ more acres in Lincoln County in l829.[4]

Like his father, William was a tanner.[5] He died early in 1831 leaving an estate consisting of his tan yard, a store, and his plantation that was subsequently divided into nine parts.[6]

Further research findings on William and his family were published in the HENCKEL GENEALOGICAL BULLETIN, Volume 7 (1976), pages 274-277.
