In 1850 Aren Hitt (84, Va, $600, farmer) is living in Mason Co., Kentucky in the household of James Donoven (30, farmer).
WHO IS HIS FATHER?
Martin Hitt and Aaron Hitt married on the same day and each was a bondsman for the other. They were probably brothers and thus had the same father.
Aaron is too old to be a great-grandson of the immigrant Peter Hitt. He must be a grandson. John and Joseph are the only reasonable candidates to be his father. When Joseph left for South Carolina in the mid 1780's Aaron was not married and he was probably still a minor. If he were Joseph's son, he would probably have gone with his father. Hence we conclude that he is probably a son of John. A weakness in this conclusion is that after 1782, when John died, Aaron did not share in the distribution of John's land. Perhaps the reason is that he was too young. Martin Hitt, Aaron's putative brother, also did not share in the distribution of John's land. It may be that he was also too young. Much later in 1811 Martin inherited 19.75 acres from his brother John. John had 10 children, and 19.75 acres is a 1/11th share of his land. Why did Martin inherit a share? It might be because Martin did not inherit any of his father's land. But if Aaron and Martin are brothers, why didn't Aaron also get a share? The answer might be that in 1811 Martin was living in Fauquier Co. and Aaron was in Kentucky.
John Hitt's widow Mary married a much younger man John Shaw. Martin Hitt was one of the bondsmen, and both Martin and Aaron witnessed the consent given by John Shaw's father. John Hitt's son William named one of his sons Aaron.
EARL J. HITT:
The following was copied from the database of Earl J. Hitt in WorldConnect (no longer existent):
Aaron appears in the 1800 Tax List for Mason County, Kentucky and is listed in all the early Census' for that county.
Aaron Hitt was a school teacher. It is said that Aaron freed his slaves after his conversion to Methodism. In 1849, Aaron was living in the household of James Donovan, his grandson, in Grant County, Kentucky.
In a letter to his youngest daughter Melvina on 5 April 1849, Aaron included considerable information on his family. Aaron was a purchaser at the Sibel Dawson estate sale, Mason County, Kentucky Courthouse as recorded in Will Book G, page 2.
No will has been found, but an Inventory of Aaron's estate was taken after his death by Elkanna Jefferson, administrator (Mason County, Kentucky Order Book "Q", page 145, 1854; Sale is in Book Q, page 146, 1855).
