"This day came Rebecca Hitt and offered for Probate & record a certain writing purporting to be the Last Will & testament of Austin Hitt deceased.
"Whereupon the Court set the 2 Monday of August 1853 for action & decree it is ordered that notice be issued to Rebecca Hitt & the following minors James H. Hitt Sibil Hitt Cornelia Hitt Penelope Hitt Clark Hitt Nancy A. Hitt Rebecca J. Hitt & Henrietta Hitt. Notice to be served upon K. C. Hall their guardian ad litem to appear & contest the same if they think proper."
Vol 7, pg 613-14; September Term 1853:
Last will and testament of Austin Hitt is admitted to probate based on the testimony of Jesse B. Thorne, one of the subscribing witnesses, and letters testamentary are issued to Rebecca Hitt, having entered into bond in the sum of $7000 with Kemey C. Hall and Charles Hitt securities. John Altman, Henry Altman, Thomas Pool, Thomas M. Billups, Jr. and Wm. B. Litchfield are appointed to appraise the personal property of the deceased.
GUARDIAN:
Before his death Austin Hitt was the guardian of Josephine Hitt and Asa B. Hitt. See notes under Henry J. Hitt for details.
ANNIE LAND HITT:
The following is from page 137 of "Benjamin Hitt & Nancy Curnal, their Antecedents and Descendants" by Myers and Phillips. It is quoted there from a book by Annie Land Hitt.
Austin Hitt's grave stone may be found in the Siloam Church Cemetery. He was the son of Reverend Benjamin Hitt and Nancy Curnal Hitt, and came to Alabama with his seven brothers in the early 1830's. He patented land in three different sections of Sumter County in 1832 and lived first in the old Oak Grove settlement, as he was a registered voter there at the voting place at Yarborough's in the year 1841. Austin later moved a few miles further south and purchased a large tract of land, which lay along the Black Bluff-Landerdale Springs Road and near Siloam Church. At his untimely death at age 43, he had large holdings of slaves, land, and cattle. His will may be seen in Orphans' Minutes Book, number 7, page 613. His wife, Rebecca, was made executrix of his estate at his death, and she continued to run the plantation until the slaves were freed after the Civil War ended. The tax assessment paper she filed in 1862, on which she listed her slaves, is in the possession of Annie Land Hitt. Some of this land stayed in the Hitt family until about 1930. Very little is known of Rebecca Hitt's family except that she had a brother, Durham Hall. The date of her death is not known, but she is buried beside her husband at Siloam.
