Snedecor's Directory of Greene County for 1855-1856 (1963 reprint) has the following entry for Benjamin Hitt:

Hitt, Benj, planter, Pleasant Ridge, Hopewell

Pleasant Ridge is his precinct of residence and Hopewell in his post office. Other possible Benjamin Hitts had either left Greene Co. or had died by 1855.

In July 1838 he purchased 80 acres in S28 T17N R3W (E/234). By June 1842 he was in financial difficulties and he mortgaged both land and personal property to Richard Hitt, who was instructed to sell the property and pay Benjamin's debts if he does not pay them himself by January 1, 1845 (F/767). In December 1851 he owed $111.40 to two businessmen in Gainesville and he transferred to them all of his interest in the estate of his deceased father (L/905). See also K/818.
