E. S. Hitt, Henry Hitt, and Benjamin Hitt, Cpl. were in the South Carolina 3rd Inf. Co. F according to Confederate State Roster -- South Carolina, Vol. II (Unit Roster).

The following is on page 451 of South Carolina Troops in Confederate Service by A. S. Salley, Volume II.

Hitt, E. S., joined for duty, at Boyd's Old Field, Laurens District, April 14, 1861; mustered into Confederate service, at Columbia, June 6, 1861; on muster roll of June 14, 1861; not on next available muster roll (October 31, 1862). The unofficial compilation says Ellis S. Hitt died at Manchester (Va.), August 29, 1862.

The 3rd Infantry Regiment, South Carolina Infantry was also known as the 3rd Regiment, South Carolina Volunteers. It began its organization in the first part of 1861 and mustered into state service in March 1861. Further enlistment was at Camp Johnson north of Columbia, South Carolina in April, 1861, and it was then mustered into Confederate service.
