OBITUARY:

The following obituaries are from http://files.usgwarchives.net/oh/williams/obits/hitt.txt

The Bryan Press, Oct. 31, 1889:

HITT - At the residence of his son, James HITT, in Pulaski township, Oct. 26th, 1889, of paralysis, Garret T. HITT, in the 83rd year of his age. The deceased was born in Culpepper county, VA. in 1807, and was married to Miss Anzelana GLADSTONE in 1833. Thence he came to Seneca county, O., in 1838 (he came to Williams county, Ohio), where he resided continuously for nearly 51 years. He endured the vicissitudes of pioneer life, and mourned the loss of eight children, and the companion of his earthly pilgrimage, with the latter of whom he walked in tenderness and affection for over 50 years. Father HITT was a loving husband and a kind father, and firmly attached to his convictions, always preferring duty to favor. And at the advanced age of 82 years, 8 months and 9 days "He laid down his rude staff like one that is weary, and calmly reposes forever." - J. A. H.
J. A. HITT and family take this method of kindly thanking the friends who so generously assisted at the preparation, funeral and burial of their dear father.

The Bryan Democrat, October 31, 1889:

Garrett T. HITT, one of the old citizens of this township, died Saturday night at the residence of his son, Jas. A. HITT. He had been in feeble health for some time but was not seriously ill until within a day of two of his death. He was eighty-three years of age.

Old Pulaski Cemetery near Beaver Creek, in Pulaski, Williams County, Ohio

Reading south to north from eastern-most row.

This is one of the oldest cemeteries in the area. Many of the stones are in bad shape and are very difficult to read.

ROW 1:

HITT, "Father", (Garret T.), 1807-1889.
"Mother", (Anzelana), 1804-1884.
William, 1836-1889.

WHO WAS HIS FATHER?

According to the census and his obituary Garrett T. Hitt was born in Virginia. Some researchers, including Earl J. Hitt, assert that his father was the Rev. Benjamin Hitt. That assertion is not plausible. In 1807, the year in which Garrett was born, Rev. Benjamin Hitt was in South Carolina. In the 1810 census he is in Laurens Co., South Carolina. His eldest son David, born in 1800, says 4 times that he was born in South Carolina. His next son Marshall, born about 1801, says three times that he was born in South Carolina, and the next son Charles, born in 1808, says twice that he was born in South Carolina.

People are leaving Virginia to move westward and southward. Once they leave, they don't return. Benjamin was a child when his father, uncle and grandfather left Fauquier Co., Virginia and settled in Laurens Co., South Carolina. Benjamin later moved on to Alabama. The idea that Benjamin's wife left South Carolina to return to Virginia to have children is not plausible, and even if she had done that, she would have returned to South Carolina with them and they would have associated their childhood with South Carolina and they would have married there or in Alabama.

The will of William Hitt who died in Seneca Co., Ohio probably in January 1853 makes it clear that Garrett Thomson Hitt was his son.
