TAX LISTS AND BIRTH DATE:

In 1791 James appears for the first time in the Fauquier Co. Personal Property Tax List; he is a tithable in the household of his father. A tithable is defined as a free white male over 16 years of age. "over 16" probably includes those who are 16. In any case the fact that James is listed as a tithable for the first time in 1791 suggests that he was born about 1775. However, the 1850 census and a statement made by his wife at the time of his death (see below) indicate that he was born about 1780.

James remains in his father's household until 1795 and then from 1796 until 1798, from 1802 until 1804 and from 1807 until at least 1819 (I have not seen the list after 1819) he has an entry of his own. He never owns any slaves and he has from 1 to 3 horses. He never owned any land in Fauquier Co., i.e., he is never in the Fauquier Co. Land Tax List (at least not before 1812, the last year for which I have seen the list), and after 1795 he probably continued to work on his father's land. Even after he purchased land in Culpeper Co. in 1810 it appears that he continued to live in Fauquier Co. The number of slaves and horses that he has doesn't seem compatible with the amount of land that he owned.

LAND in CULPEPER CO.:

On October 9, 1810 Samuel Clagett and Anny, his wife, of Fauquier Co. sold to James Hitt of the same county for £89 18/3 a tract of 117 acres in Culpeper Co. It is described by metes and bounds; it adjoins "Isaac Watts land on the top of the Giants Castle" Witnesses are William Horner, Edward Digges, Jun., Israel Glasscock, Jesse Hitt, Stephen Hitt and Elijah Hitt. (Culpeper Co. Deed Records EE/42) On the same date Samuel Clagett and his wife sold to James Hitt for £100 a tract of 150 acres in Culpeper Co. and Bromfield Parish "in the Goord vine fork of Rappahannock River joining on the lower side Giants Castle Mountain". It is described by metes and bounds and is part of a 400 acre tract granted to Richard Nolle, Junr. in 1750 by the right honorable Thomas Lord Fairfax. The witnesses are the same as before. (EE/45)

In the Culpeper Land Tax Lists from 1811 through 1829 (the last year for which I have seen the list) James Hitt is the owner of two tracts, one of 117 acres and another of 150 acres. They are said to be on the east side of Giants Castle about 12 miles NW of the courthouse.

WILL:

The following is copied from Earl J. Hitt's database 'hitthaynie':

The will of James Hitt was written 12 October 1853 and proven on 14 November 1853. James' will specifies the following: To wife Malinda 1/3 of land, East Side of Castle Mountain with the house. To daughters Nancy and Catherine Hitt the other 2/3 of this land. To daughter Jane, wife of William Embrey, Negro boy Charles. To son Alexander $1, his full portion having been advanced some years ago. Residue of estate to be sold, one half of the proceeds to wife Malinda, one half to these children, Viz. Ludwell Hitt, Nelly Handback, Robert Hitt, John Hitt, Nancy Hitt, Catherine Hitt, Elzey Hitt and Jane Embrey. Executor: Friend Benjamin Lillard.

WHO WAS HIS FATHER?

The following is from Earl Hitt's database 'hitthaynie' in WorldConnect: A death record provided by James' widow, Malinda Hitt, states that James Hitt died on October 19, 1853 in Rappahannock County, Virginia, at the age of 72; that James was born in Fauquier County, Virginia and that he was the son of John Hitt.
