She is mentioned in her mother's will signed July 3, 1845, but she is not among the minor heirs of her grandfather Benjamin B. Hitt in a petition presented to the Sumter County Orphans' Court on October 10, 1850 (6/606), nor is she mentioned in a decree of the Orphans' Court on November 29, 1849 appointing a guardian for her 3 brothers (6/442).

AGE:

There is no specific evidence as to when she was born. The 1850 census indicates that Mary Elizabeth was born about 1835. Since her parents were married in February 1834, she is probably the eldest child. Court documents indicate that the boys were born in about 1837, 1839, and 1841. This leaves 1843 as a probable birth year for Jane Meek.
