Notes
General:
PERSONAL PROPERTY TAX LISTS and BIRTH YEAR:

In 1797 Jesse appears for the first time in the Fauquier Co. Personal Property Tax List; he is a tithable in the household of his father. A tithable is defined as a free white male over 16 years of age. That Jesse is listed as a tithable for the first time in 1797 suggests that he was born about 1781. He remains in his father's household until 1801. He has an entry of his own for the first time in 1802 and he appears annually in the tax list until 1812. He has no slaves; sometimes he has a horse and sometimes he doesn't. In 1812 he has two.

LAND TRANSACTIONS:

On June 22, 1801 John Hitt, Junior and Sinah, his wife, of Fauquier Co. sold to Jesse Hitt of the same place for £50 a tract in Fauquier Co. being part of a tract that John Hitt purchased from William Russell. It is described by metes and bounds and is adjacent to Russell, Nathaniel Owens and Chichester. Witnesses: Elisha Curtis, Martin Hitt. (Fauquier Co. Deed Records 14/1027)

On May 28, 1805 Jesse Hitt of Fauquier Co. sold to John Kemper of the same place for $100 a tract of 30 acres in Fauquier Co. being part of a tract purchased by John Hitt from William Russell and conveyed by John Hitt to Jesse Hitt June 22, 1801. It is described by metes and bounds. Witnesses: John Bronaugh, Thornton Buckner, Ben. Bronaugh. Signed Jesse Hitt. (16/234)

On December 24, 1810 Jesse Hitt sold to Stephen Hitt for $100 all his interest in a tract of about 217 acres whereon his father John Hitt, dec'd, lived, it being near Fauquier Court House and adjoining the lands of the late Capt. James Bell, Francis James, Wily Roy and Charles Lee. Witnesses: Israel Glascock, Francis (his X mark) James, Elijah Hitt. Signed Jesse Hitt. (17/801)

LAND TAX LISTS:

From 1802 through 1805 Jesse Hitt is in the Fauquier Land Tax List as the owner of a tract of 30 acres which is said to be "of John Hitt".

EARL J. HITT:

The following was copied from the database of Earl J. Hitt in WorldConnect (no longer existent):

Jesse was still living in Fauquier County, Virginia in 1810. He moved with his brother, William, from Winchester, Virginia to Martin County, Indiana and, then in about 1830 to Vermillion County, Indiana.
There is a Jesse Hitt listed in the 1830 census for Washington County, Indiana with his family as follows: 1 male 15-20, 1 male 40-50, and 1 female 40-50. The young male shown in the census is believed to be Samuel Todd, Jesse Hitt's step-son.
Samuel Todd's marriage license, in Vermillion County, Illinois, shows that Jesse Hitt gave his consent for Samuel, who was eighteen, to marry. A second document also consents to the marriage and is signed by Jesse Hitt and Margaret Hitt, presumed to be his wife. From this information, it is believed that Jesse's wife, Margaret, had previously been married, probably to a man named Todd. Samuel Todd married Nancy Thompson, and the records show Joseph Thompson and Lydia Thompson giving their consent for their daughter to marry.
