DEED RECORDS:
There are numerous references to Joel Hitt in the index to the deed records in Culpeper Co. The following is interesting because it relates to a previous transaction involving Joel's father, John Hitt. See notes under John Hitt.
On July 18, 1836 James Vaughan of Culpeper Co. sells to Joel Hitt of the same county for $500 his interest in a parcel of Negroes consisting of Esther and Ann and all of Esther's children which John Hitt, now dec'd, gave to Elizabeth Vaughan, the wife of Russell Vaughan, which Negroes and their increase were to go to the legal heirs of Elizabeth Vaughan after her death, namely, James Vaughan, Mary Vaughan, Nancy Vaughan, now Nancy Hitt, William Vaughan, Sarah Vaughan, Elizabeth Vaughan, Jr. and Russell Vaughan. Said Negroes are at this time in Tennessee in the possession of Elizabeth Vaughan and are to remain in her possession during her natural lifetime and afterwards are to be equally divided amongst her legal heirs. Joel Hitt is to take possession at the death of Elizabeth Vaughan of his just purchased 1/7 interest in the Negroes. Witnesses: George Eggborn, Joab Hitt, Holbert Newman. (Culpeper Co. Deed Records 3/111) The deed implies that Russell Vaughan is now deceased.
