The parenthsized numbers represent real ages to be compared with the age categories that appear in the census. The census suggests that there was another male child born before 1800 and who was still in his father's household in 1820. He is not mentioned in the deed of December 17, 1821. He might have died shortly after the 1820 census, or the census entries may correspond to sometone who was not John's son.
BIRTH YEAR and PERSONAL PROPERTY TAX LISTS:
In the Fauquier Co. Personal Property Tax Lists John Hitt first appears as a tithable (male > 16) in the household of his father in 1789. This suggests that he was born about 1773. In 1790 he is missing, in 1791 he has an entry of his own, in 1792 he is missing and then from 1793 through 1802 he is in the list. He has no slaves and 1 or 2 horses, usually 1. He is always in the same district as his father and brothers.
From 1803 through 1822 John Hitt is in the Culpeper Co. Personal Property Tax Lists. In 1803 his entry is contiguous with that of William Hitt, his uncle. Sometimes John Hitt has one slave, sometimes none, and he has from 1 to 4 horses, most commonly 2. In 1821 and 1822 his entry is "John Hitt Est". From 1815 to 1821 he is designated "L. F." ("little fork"), which distinguishes him from his second cousin John Hitt (John, Joseph, Joseph, Peter (immigrant)), who is "G. F." ("great fork").
LAND:
From 1795 through 1801 John Hitt, Jr. is in the Fauquier Co. Land Tax Lists as the owner of a tract of 61 acres and then as the owner of a tract of 30 acres. The 61 acre tract was purchased from William Russell.
On September 22, 1794 William Russell of Fauquier Co. and Mary, his wife, sold to John Hitt, Jun. for £36 12s a tract of about 61 acres in Fauquier Co. adjacent to Chichester, Russell and Owens. Witnesses: Charles Kemper, Joseph Minter, Charles Hitt. (Fauquier Co. Deed Records 12/72)

From 1804 through 1821 John Hitt is in the Culpeper Co. Land Tax List as the owner of those 169 acres located near Briggs Mill about 20 miles NE or NW of the courthouse.
On page 336 of Book UU of the Culpeper Co. Deed Records is a plat dated January 25, 1825 showing how a 170 acre tract belonging to John Hitt is to be divided among his legatees. On January 27, 1825 pursusant to a decree of the County Court of Culpeper Co. three commissioners appointed by that court alloted to the widow Sinah Hitt and the other distributees their respective parts agreeable to the plat and survey. According to the plat Dudley Hitt has 17 acres, Steptoe Hitt 17, Morgan Hitt 17, Mrs. Hitt 56, David Creele 23, Ambrose Hitt 20 and John Hitt 20.
