AGE:

In the 1810 census John is at least 26 and thus was born as late as 1794, but in 1820 he already has 4 children, so he is probably at least 28. Thus he was born in 1792 or earlier. The 1840 census implies that he was born in 1790 or later.

LAND in SOUTH CAROLINA:

On January 28, 1828 Thomas Hitt of Laurens District sold to John Hitt of the same place for $600 all that plantation containing 105 acres in Laurens District on Bank's Creek waters of Saluda River on which he was then living. The deed is signed Thomas Hitt, and the witnesses are Alsey Fuller and Solomon Fuller. It was acknowledged by Alsey Fuller February 15, 1840 and on the same day Sarah Hitt, widow of Thomas Hitt, relinquished her dower rights. (O/31)

On August 28, 1829 John Hitt of Laurens District sold to John Boyd of the same place for $225 a tract of 69.5 acres on the waters of Bank's Creek in Laurens District, being a part of the tract on which John Boyd then lived. It is described by metes and bound and adjoins the land of William Ligon and Lewis Ball. The deed is signed John (X) Hitt, and the witnesses are Jesse Hitt, Martin Ball and Jeremiah Ball. On September 2, 1829 Jesse Hitt acknowledged the deed and the following day Sarah Hitt, wife of Jno. Hitt, relinquished her dower rights.

LAND in ALABAMA:

The following tracts were patented to John Hitt:

NWSE S2 T21N R1W 39 acres 10/20/1835 Greene Co.
SESE S35 T22N R1W 40.10 acres 10/28/1835 Greene Co.

</pre>
On August 14, 1835 John Hitt and his wife Sarah sold 156 acres in Greene Co. (H/272, W1/2NE & E1/2NW S2 T21N R1W). W1/2NE was patented to Benjamin Hitt 5/30/1833 and E1/2NW was patented to Moses Lewis 6/10/1826. I found no record of John having purchased it. I found no record of his having sold what was patented to him.

The 4 tracts in Sumter Co. are pairwise non-contiguous. In March 1836 he purchased NE S8 T17N R3W (D/821). He then owned 240 contiguous acres in S8, and in February 1838 he sold them to Moore Stephens (C/198). In September 1837 John's son Oswell sold a 200 acre tract in S9 T17N R3W which included E1/2NW, which had been patented to John. In October 1845 John sold all of the NW quarter of S15 T17N R3W (K/17). It is not clear how he acquired the other half of it. I do not know if he owned land when he died. In September 1850 his son Lazarus sold W1/2SE S9 (L/732).
