BIRTH YEAR and PERSONAL PROPERTY TAX LISTS:
The 1850 census suggests that Joseph Hitt was born in 1776. In 1792 and in 1793 his father has 3 tithables in the Culpeper Co. Personal Property Tax List and from 1794 to 1796 he has two. In prior years he has only one. It seems likely that Joseph is one of the additional tithables in 1792 and in 1793. If he became 16 and thus tithable in 1792, then he was born about 1776.
Joseph may be the additional tithable from 1794 to 1796. He has an entry of his own for the first time in 1800, and in 1797 and later his father has only 1 tithable (himself). Thus it is not clear where Joseph is from 1797 to 1799. From 1800 to 1823 (I have not seen anything after 1823) he is in the Personal Property Tax List as 'Joseph Hitt, Jr.' to distinguish him from his father, who generally is just 'Joseph Hitt'. Joseph, Jr. never has any slaves and generally has two horses.
CHILDREN:
The following sequence of entries occurs in the 1850 census: William Hitt, Charles M. Hitt, John R. Hitt, x, Joel Hitt, Joseph Hitt, Mumford Hitt, 2x, Marshall Hitt, Peter Hitt. William and Joseph are brothers; Joel and John R. are sons of John Hitt, who is a brother of William and Joseph. Peter is Joseph's son. Charles M. fills a gap in the 1840 census for William and is undoubtedly his son. So who are Marshall and Mumford? It seems very likely that they are part of the same family group.
A deposition in a lawsuit provides a list of the children of Joseph's brother John and the 1850 census provides a list of the children of his brothers William and James. By a process of elimination Marshall and Mumford are probably sons of Joseph.
There are 3 other adult Hitt males in Culpeper Co. in 1850. One is John Hitt, 50, carpenter. He has been in Culpeper Co. a long time. He married there in 1822. If he, like all the other Hitts already mentioned, is a descendant of Joseph II (Peter the immigrant, Joseph, Joseph), who moved to Culpeper Co. before 1782, then by the same process of elimination he is a son of Joseph (Joseph III). Note that he is not one of the sons of John III (Peter the immigrant, John, John, John), who bought land in Culpeper Co. in 1802.
A weakness in my conjecture that John is a son of Joseph is the fact that in 1820 John, who is as yet unmarried, is not in the household of his father. John is about 20, but the 16-26 male slot is occupied by Marshall, who is 18. John, although unmarried, is old enough to leave his father, and it might be the case that he is living with some other relative.
Another adult male Hitt in Culpeper Co. in 1850 is Joseph Hitt, 36, miller. He has a wife and 2 children and has been married about 5 years. He MIGHT be a son of Joseph. He fits into the 1820 and 1840 censusus for Joseph but is inexplicably missing in 1830.
The third adult male Hitt in Culpeper Co. in 1850 is William R. Hitt/Hill, 49, farmer. He is living in the household of Gilly Mundy at 15/15, very close to the sequence of Hitts mentioned above. Peter Hitt, the shoemaker, married Emily C. Munday. As with John there is no room for him in the 1820 census for Joseph.
LAND in CULPEPER CO.:
This Joseph Hitt is in the Culpeper Co. Land Tax List for the first time in 1826. He owns 55 acres 12 miles west of the courthouse which is said to have come from Jos. Hitt's estate and he continues to own it until at least 1829 (the last year for which I have seen the Land Tax List). Joseph Hitt the father owned 150 acres. His son Joseph inherited 55 acres and another son William inherited 127 acres. 150 acres miraculously became 182!
On April 28, 1843 Joseph Hitt of Culpeper Co. sold to Mary G. Hitt of the same place for $500 the tract on which he then resided and the following items: one bay horse, 5 head of cattle, 4 sheep, one hog, one McCormac plow, one shovel plow, one harrow, 4 feather beds and bedsteads with the furniture attached to them, all the household and kitchen furniture. Signed Joseph Hitt, Sen'r. (6/318)
