WHO IS HIS FATHER?
Martin Hitt and Aaron Hitt married on the same day and each was a bondsman for the other. They were probably brothers and thus had the same father. See the notes under Aaron as to who his father was.
PERSONAL PROPERTY TAX LISTS:
1782 is the first year that a list of men required to pay a tax on personal property is available for Fauquier Co., Virginia. Martin Hitt is in the list in 1790, 1792, 1793, 1795, 1800, 1802, 1803. He never has any slaves; he always has one horse except in 1800 when he has none. In 1790 his entry is contiguous with those of his brothers John and Peter and John's son Elijah, and he is always in the same district as these men (District 1). His entry is usually contiguous with several men associated with his older brother John.
The 1810 census indicates that Martin was born before 1765. He is thus at least 25 when he appears for the first time in the Personal Property Tax List.
From 1806 until at least 1819 (the last year in which I have seen the list) Martin Hitt is in the other district (District 2) whereas the sons of his brother John remain in District 1. He has no slaves and 1 or 2 horses. Often a second tithe is in his household and in 1810 his name is given. It is Armstead.
LAND TAX LISTS:
Land Tax Lists are first available for Fauquier Co. in 1783. From 1809 until at least 1812 (the last year for which I have seen the list) Martin Hitt is the owner of 100 acres in District 2. In 1811 Martin inherits 19.75 acres from his brother John Hitt and in 1811 and 1812 he is the owner of those 19.75 acres in District 1.
DEATH:
"Fauquier County, Virginia Guardian Bonds 1759-1871" (John K. Gott, 1990), pg 69:
Mary Hitt, chosen gdn. of Elizabeth Ann Hitt, orph. of Martin Hitt, dec'd. 31 March 1831. For $200. Sec: Armistead Hitt.
Martin Hitt died before March 1831, but he probably died in 1830 or before since he is not in the 1830 census.
CHILDREN:
The following document lists the children of Martin Hitt. It is 28 of 30 and can be seen at

The County Court of Fauquier Co. is being asked to authorize the sale of a 30 acre tract and to distribute the proceeds among the individuals named in the suit. The smallness of the tract and the large number of people entitled to a share of it make it unfeasible to divide it. The court issued a decree on September 30, 1858. On November 20 and December 4, 1858 no adequate bids were received, but on December 11, 1858 it was sold at auction on the steps of the courthouse to Jno. A. Spilman at $12.50/acre or $382.42 in total.
Document 28 begins as follows:
"To the worshipful Justices of the County court of Fauquier in chancery sitting
"Humbly complaining your orator Morgan Hitt respectfully represents that he is entitled to thirty acres, two roods & fifteen poles of land jointly and equally with his brothers Armstead Hitt, Alexander Hitt, Ludwell J. Hitt, and his sisters Elizabeth Ann Hitt, Ann Hitt, who married Elisha Lawler, and Francis Hitt, who married Enoch Curtis.
"The said land was recently recovered by judgment of the circuit court of Fauquier affirmed by the court of appeals of Virginia, by the said parties in a suit against Stephen Fletcher and lies near the town of Warrenton."
