GERMANNA RECORD NO. 1, pg 31:

Martin Hitt b. Dec. 29, 1763, m. Margaret Smith. The "Journal of the Society of Germanna Colonies", Vol. 1, No. 1, states that Rev. Martin Hitt died in Ohio Feb. 16, 1832, and that he had a son, John Wesley Hitt (b. Mar. 8, 1803 in Bourbon Co., Ky., d. Mar. 8, 1882), who m. Maria John Sept. 4, 1833 and left issue. Rev. Martin Hitt was an early Methodist minister.

Martin was an early Methodist Minister in Kentucky and Ohio and was widely known as an abolitionist. He inherited 93 slaves from his father whom he educated. In about 1815 Martin, his wife and nine children moved to a new farm located in what is presently the City of Urbana, Ohio. Here he gave his slaves their freedom.
Martin moved to Paris, Bourbon County, Kentucky in 1796 and then to Champaigne County, Ohio in March of 1815. Martin left Kentucky because of his opposition to slavery and moved to Ohio where he set his slaves free. Many of his slaves assumed the Hitt family name. Martin entered the Methodist ministry in 1789 and was appointed to the Allegheny Circuit in 1790. In 1891 he was appointed to the Lancaster Circuit and in between 1793 and 1794 he was sent to Frederick, Maryland.
Deed - Martin Hitt to George Chrisman, dated December 17th, 1798; Martin Hitt and wife Margaret, to George Chrisman and wife, Sally, of Fauquier County, Virginia. For fifty pounds paid by Daniel Hitt, one lot lying in Maidstone or Rector Town, in Fauquier County, Virginia, on Main Street. (Bourbon County, Kentucky Deed Book D, p. 420)
