AGE:

In 1810 Jesse is 26-44; since he already has 5 children, he is probably at least 30. He is one of the males less than 16 in the 1790 census entry for his father. Thus he was born 1774-1780.

DEATH and CHILDREN:

On August 23, 1816 the administrator of the estate of Robert Hamilton reported that Jesse Hitt had received his legacy in right of his wife Nancy. Jesse Hitt was alive on August 23, 1816.

On August 25, 1826 John Hitt, administrator of the estate of Lazarus Hitt, dec'd, reported the amounts which he had distributed to the legatees. He said, "Jesse Hitt deceased one of the legatees departed this life having seven children Minors intitled to that sum of $30.83 -- to be Divided amongst them." So, Jesse Hitt died before August 25, 1826. His seven children were minors either then or at the time of his death. See notes under Lazarus Hitt for more details.

A petition presented to the Court of Ordinary in Laurens Co. in 1840 purports to name all of the living heirs of Jesse's father Lazarus Hitt, who died intestate. The court is asked to partition among the heirs a certain tract of land that belonged to Lazarus. The text of the petition is in the notes under Lazarus Hitt.

The petitioners are all descendants and heirs of Lazarus Hitt. The petition names other heirs in addition to the petitioners. Among the petitioners are 3 children of Lazarus -- Reuben Martin, Sarah Ann (married to Lewis Ball), and Eve (married to William Drummond). Two sons of Lazarus, John and Benjamin B., are also mentioned. These five children of Lazarus are all alive in 1840, and thus there is no need to mention their children. Lazarus's eldest son Henry is deceased in 1840; five of the petitioners are identified as sons of Henry, and the children of Henry's deceased daughter Elizabeth (married to Abraham Hollingsworth) are also mentioned.

Lazarus's son Jesse is not mentioned because in 1840 he is dead. No one is identified as a child of Jesse.

Drury Sims and his wife Elizabeth are mentioned. Elizabeth is presumably not a child of any of Lazarus's sons who are alive in 1840, and Henry has a daughter Elizabeth (wife of Abraham Hollingsworth). Thus, Elizabeth the wife of Drury Sims must be a daughter of Jesse Hitt.

The petition also mentions the sons of John Hitt, dec'd, who is said to be a son of the intestate (Lazarus Hitt). Lazarus's son John is still alive and is mentioned in the petition. Presumably John Hitt, dec'd, is a grandson of the intestate rather than a son. Note that Elizabeth Hollingsworth is mistakenly identified as a deceased daughter of the intestate. She is in fact a granddaughter. I have assigned John to Jesse because he does not fit in as a son of any of Lazarus's other sons.

Thus, only two of Jesse's seven children are mentioned in 1840. It seems unlikely that 5 out of 7 would have died between 1826 and 1840. Hence it seems to me likely that some of Jesse's children were for some reason not included in the 1840 petition.

Mary Ann Hitt married Ephraim Banks in Greene Co., Alabama in 1828. In the 1830 census Ephraim Banks is living next to Drury Sims in Greene Co. In 1840 Ephraim L. Banks is living very close to a large number of descendants of Lazarus Hitt. Both Ephraim and his wife were born in South Carolina. Even though Ephraim Banks is not mentioned in the 1840 petition, I think Mary Ann Hitt is probably a daughter of Jesse Hitt.

Another possible son of Jesse is Henry Hitt, born about 1810 and married to Sarah Riley. He lived in Tuscaloosa Co., Alabama. See notes under Henry.
