According to a statement made by Sallie Kelley to Rainey Hitt in about 1884, Mary Hitt was alive when her father died in 1865 and she was one of the heirs. By December 1884 Mary had died. See notes under the father Benjamin L. Hitt.

In 1870 Mary Hitt (15, SC) is living in Laurens Co., South Carolina with Henry Hitt (61, SC), a brother of Benjamin L. Hitt, who died in 1865. Also in the household is Rany Hitt (22, SC), Henry's nephew and Benjamin's son. It may be that Mary, 15 is Rany's sister, although in fact she is much older, based on previous censuses.
