The younger man is Nathan; the older man is his brother Elijah.

In 1820 Nathan is in Fauquier Co. in the household of his older brother Elijah.

PERSONAL PROPERTY TAX LISTS and BIRTH YEAR:

1782 is the first year that a list of men required to pay a tax on personal property is available for Fauquier Co., Virginia. Nathan Hitt is in the list for the first time in 1788 as a tithable (white male >16) in his father's household. If he became 16 in 1788, he was born about 1772. He remains in his father's household until 1790. From 1791 onward until at least 1819 (I have not seen the list after 1819) Nathan has an entry of his own. He never has any slaves and he has from 1 to 3 horses, most commonly 2.

Earl J. Hitt says that Nathan never married and that he lived with his brother Elijah in Warrenton.

LAND:

On September 26, 1801 John Hitt, Jun. and Sinah, his wife, of Fauquier Co. sold to Nathan Hitt of the same place for £50 a tract of about 50 acres in Fauquier Co. adjoining lands of Elisha Curtis, John Kemper, Nathaniel Owings, James Bell, Francis James and Benjamin Holtzclaw. It is on the main road from Fauquier Court House to Dumfries. Witness: Elijah Hitt. Signed John Hitt, Sinai Hitt. (Fauquier Co. Deed Records 14/1063)

LAND TAX LISTS:

The Fauquier Co. Land Tax Lists are available from 1783 onward. From 1802 through 1810 Nathan is in the list as the owner of a 50 acre tract which is said to be "of John Hitt". In 1811 and in 1812 (the last year for which I have seen the list) he owns an additional 19.75 acres and the 69.75 acre tract is said to be "of Hitt's Repres'ts". See notes under his father.

GUARDIANSHIP:

"Fauquier County, Virginia Guardian Bonds 1759-1871" (John K. Gott, 1990):

pg 19: Nathan Hitt, gdn. of Stephen Hitt, orph. of John Hitt, dec'd. 24 Feb 1806. For $200. Sec: John Hitt.

EARL J. HITT:

The following was copied from the database of Earl J. Hitt in WorldConnect (no longer existent):

Nathan never married and he lived with his brother Elijah at Warrentown, Virginia. He was still living in Fauquier County in 1824. In his will, he left his money to his nephews, Dudley David, John R., and Steptoe; all children of John Hitt.
