In 1810 Peter Hitt's widow is probably living in Laurens Co. in the household of her son Larkin.
PERSONAL PROPERTY TAX LIST in FAUQUIER CO., VIRGINIA:
1782 is the first year that a list of men required to pay a tax on personal property is available for Fauquier Co., Virginia. Lazarus Hitt is on the list from 1782 through 1784. His absence in 1785 and later suggests that he left for South Carolina about 1785. His father Joseph is in the list only one time, in 1783. There is a Peter Hitt in the list in 1783 and in 1784 who may be Lazarus's brother, but he may be another Peter Hitt (son of Harman).
Peter and Lazarus and their father probably left Fauquier Co. for South Carolina about 1785.
ELIZABETH?
Some researchers including Myers and Phillips say that Peter had a daughter Elizabeth. The 1790 and 1800 censuses indicate that no daughter lived into adulthood. In the 1800 census there is an oblique mark in the female <10 slot, but a much darker horizontal mark through it suggests that the intent of the census taker was to correct an error.
AGES OF CHILDREN:
The 1850 census gives us approximate birth years for David, Benjamin and Larkin. The 1790 census suggests that the younger of Thomas and Abner was born about 1774. I am not aware of any evidence as to which was the older.
MARRIAGE:
It is generally stated that Peter Hitt's wife was Mary Shaw, but I have not seen any evidence for that. The wife of John Hitt, who died in 1782, was named Mary and in 1791 she married John Shaw, thus becoming Mary Shaw. I suspect that this marriage is the source of the idea that Peter's wife was Mary Shaw.
LAND IN SOUTH CAROLINA:
On November 7, 1785 Samuel Eakins, blacksmith, of Laurens Co., South Carolina and his wife Jane sell to Peter Hitt of Laurens Co. for £85 Virginia money a tract of 180 acres in the District of 96 on a branch of Little River known by the name of Matthias Cook's Old Survey. It was granted to Eakins on August 1, 1785. The witnesses are Thos. and Wm. Fakes and Wm. Carson. (Laurens Co. Deed Records B/117, 118)
On April 22, 1794 Clement Deale of Pendleton Co., South Carolina sells to Peter Hitt of Laurens Co. for £100 a tract of 150 acres on the waters of Saluda River. The witnesses are Thomas Hitt and _____ Deale. (F/83)

In the index to Laurens County, South Carolina Will Book C-1 (1802-09) there are 3 references to Peter Hitt: pages 210, 221, and 222 (LDS microfilm 24088). Another version of these documents is in Box 35, Package 16 (image 971/999) of Laurens Co. Estate Papers. They can be seen online at familysearch.org. Will Book C-1 can also be seen online at familysearch.org. What you see on pages 221-23 below is an amalgamation of the two sources.

No total amount is given. The binding is tight and individual amounts on LDS microfilm 24088 are not readable. Individual amounts are readable on the online version. When I add them up, I get $2611.19.

On page 116 of their book Beatrice Myers and Vada Phillips say,
"On February 3, 1806, Mary Hitt, widow of Peter Hitt, consented to the appointment of David Hitt and Thomas Hitt as the administrators of the estate of her late husband. Letters of administration were granted to Thomas Hitt and David Hitt on the estate of their father, Peter Hitt, on March 3, 1806. With the warrant of appointment, it was mentioned that Patrick Todd and Lazarus Hitt and Josiah Crews were bondsmen. The administration and sale of the estate, along with appraisals of goods and chattels, are recorded in Will Book C, pps. 210 and 221. The goods and chattels included five slaves, five horses, thirty-three hogs, and $2225.15, and the list of goods was signed by Lazarus Hitt, William Rushing, and David Sims on March 13, 1806. The sale of the goods is recorded in Book C, p. 222 on March 19, 1806.
"The bond for administrators of the estate was set at $3,000. The bond was signed by David Hitt, Thomas Hitt, Lazarus Hitt, Pat Todd, and Josiah Crews.
"In the consent for administration, Mary listed her five sons. Since she did not list daughters, it might be assumed that part of the bondsmen were her sons-in-laws, but we do not know the names of the daughters."
Comment: Genealogically the most important document is the consent of February 3, 1806 in which the widow lists her sons. It is not on page 210 of Book C, and Myers and Phillips give no specific indication of where it is to be found. Documents in Book C are generally in chronological orders and it is not between pages 180 and 320 of Book C. The document on page 210 was signed only by the clerk and the amount of the bond was not stated. It was not signed by the 5 men listed by Myers and Phillips.
I suspect that the alleged document of February 3 never existed and that Myers and Phillips were thinking of the February 23 document, which mentions three men who are in fact Mary's sons although the document does not say that they are her sons.
