PERSONAL PROPERTY TAX LISTS AND BIRTH DATE:
In 1800 Presley appears for the first time in the Fauquier Co. Personal Property Tax List; he is a tithable in the household of his father. A tithable is defined as a free white male over 16 years of age. That Presley is listed as a tithable for the first time in 1800 suggests that he was born about 1784. He is in his father's household until 1802 and then in his widowed mother's household until 1806. In 1807 Presley and his brothers Harrison and Alexander have a joint entry. After that Presley is absent.
EARL J. HITT:
The following was copied from the database of Earl J. Hitt in WorldConnect (no longer existent):
Presley and Asenath had 13 sons and one daughter, some of whom are unknown.
In 1809, shortly after their marriage, Presley and Asenath moved to Perry County, Ohio. In 1812, Presley enlisted in McConnel's Regiment of the Ohio Militia as a private. Twelve days later Presley returned to farming in Perry County. Presley's enlistment record, dated 29 August 1812, shows that he was discharged 9 September 1812, but did not report the reason for his discharge. In about 1840, Presely and his family moved to Hocking County, Ohio where Presley was a land owner.
The will and estate record for Presley Russel Hiit can be found: Probate Court File, 1866, Box 36; Will and Estate Record, Vinton County, Ohio.
Quoting from the letter from Russell T. Hitt to Jesse Martin Hitt, 20 April 1930:
"I am aware of the facts that there are Hitts in this country who aree of English extraction, but certain facts I have gleaned in my own research seem to indicate that our particular family is of German origin. Before I go into this, I want to tell you what I know of Presley Russell (Sr). He is reputed to have been born in Virginia, to have served in the War of '12, to have attended William and Mary College. He was a student of Latin, Greek, and Hebrew, and was a school teacher. He was more or less of a genious, making with his own hands clocks, spinning wheels, etc. He brought up his large family of 14 children on a farm near Ewing in Hocking county, Ohio. The old "Hitt farm" was not far from Logan, Ohio. In his old age Presley (Sr) retired to McArthur, O., to die."
