General:
Sarah D. Hitt may or may not be a daughter of Benjamin B. Hitt. Her husband Samuel D. Daniel was the first administrator of Benjamin's estate and at the land sale he purchased a tract of Benjamin's land. He is not listed among the heirs in the court order of October 10, 1850, but that is explicable by the fact that the purpose of the order was to give notice to the heirs concerning the sale of Benjamin B. Hitt's land. The administrator needs no such notice. On April 3, 1852 Samuel D. Daniel was replaced by John W. Altman. What is not so easily explicable is that Samuel D. Daniel is not listed among the distributees either in the partial settlement of September 12, 1853 or the final settlement of March 24, 1855.

In the partial settlement $2390.43 was distributed and the standard payment to an heir was $217.43. Sophia, the widow, got $433.61. $217.43 is $2390.61 - $433.61 divided by 9. Only 8 distributees are listed, so Samuel D. Daniel might be the other one. In the final settlement $1106.68 was distributed and $110.67 was the standard payment. Sophia got $221.33. $110.67 is $1106.68 - $221.33 divided by 8.

Sarah D. fits nicely into the 1830 and 1840 censuses, and if she is not a daughter of Benjamin B., it is not obvious whose daughter she would be. She and her husband are not in the 1860 census, so maybe they died between September 1853 (partial settlement) and March 1855 (final settlement).

On September 22, 1846 Benjamin B. Hitt conveyed to Sarah D. Daniel a tract of 6 1/2 acres in consideration of the love and affection that he has for her and for her better maintainance and support (K/60). This deed strongly suggests that she is his daughter. On January 4, 1849 Samuel D. Daniel mortgaged 160 acres to Benjamin B. Hitt because the latter had endorsed several promissory notes for Samuel in the total amount of $1094.49 (K/724).
