PERSONAL PROPERTY TAX LISTS and BIRTH YEAR:
In 1805 Stephen appears for the first time in the Fauquier Co. Personal Property Tax List; he is a tithable in the household of his widowed mother. A tithable is defined as a free white male over 16 years of age. That Stephen is listed as a tithable for the first time in 1805 suggests that he was born about 1789. He remains in his mother's household until 1806. He has an entry of his own for the first time in 1809 and he appears annually in the tax list until at least 1819 (the last year for which I have seen the list). He has no slaves; he has either one horse or two.
LAND TRANSACTIONS:
On December 24, 1810 Jesse Hitt sold to Stephen Hitt for $100 all his interest in a tract of about 217 acres whereon his father John Hitt, dec'd, lived, it being near Fauquier Court House and adjoining the lands of the late Capt. James Bell, Francis James, Wily Roy and Charles Lee. Witnesses: Israel Glascock, Francis (his X mark) James, Elijah Hitt. Signed Jesse Hitt. (17/801)
LAND TAX LISTS:
The Fauquier Co. Land Tax Lists are available from 1783 onward. Stephen is not in the lists until 1811 when it appears that he inherited some of his father's land. See notes under his father. Stephen has 79 acres in 1811 and in 1812 (the last year for which I have seen the list).
