PERSONAL PROPERTY TAX LIST:

1782 is the first year that a list of men required to pay a tax on personal property is available for Fauquier Co., Virginia. From 1782 through 1795 Charles Hitt is on the list. From 1789 through 1795 his son William is an additional tithable (male 16 years of age or older) in his household. In 1796 and later Charles is absent from the list suggesting that he left for Kentucky about 1796.

If William became 16 in 1789, he was born about 1773. Often young men do not appear as a tithable in their father's household until they are beyond 16, so he may have been born somewhat earlier. The censuses suggest that he born between 1770 and 1775.
