Notes
General:
PERSONAL PROPERTY TAX LISTS and BIRTH YEAR:

In 1801 William appears for the first time in the Fauquier Co. Personal Property Tax List; he is a tithable in the household of his father. A tithable is defined as a free white male over 16 years of age. That William is listed as a tithable for the first time in 1801 suggests that he was born about 1785. He remains in his father's household until 1804. He has an entry of his own for the first time in 1805, the year of his father's death. From 1805 through 1809 William's entry is contiguous with several (sometimes as many as 5) of his siblings. In 1810 an entry for 'William' is contiguous with Hannah Hitt, the widow of Peter Hitt (1765-1802). In 1811 an entry for 'William' is contiguous with the same siblings as before. In 1812 there are 2 Williams -- one contiguous with several of John's children and one near Hannah. From 1813 until 1819 (the last year for which I have seen the list) William's entry is near Hannah. It is probably the case that William Hitt contiguous with John's children (1805-1809, 1811, 1812) is John's son and that the William near Hannah (1810, 1812, 1813-1819) is someone else. This interpretation is consistent with Earl J. Hitt's claim that John's son William moved to Indiana in 1813. Each year John's son William has 1 horse except in 1807 when he has nothing.

The "someone else" is the younger half-brother of William's father John.

LAND TAX LISTS:

Land Tax Lists are first available for Fauquier Co. in 1783. In 1811 and in 1812 William is the owner of a tract of 87 acres, which is said to be "of Marshall". 1812 is the last year for which I have seen the list.

LAND TRANSACTIONS:

On February 4, 1803 John Puller of Culpeper Co. leased to William Hitt of the same county a tract of 69 7/8 acres adjoining John Bright, Peter Kemper and on Negro Run during the natural lives of William and Liddy, his wife. The yearly rent is 500 pounds of crop tobacco and payment of all taxes. William Hitt is to keep all houses and fences which shall be built in good repair and at the end of the lease period deliver the land with all houses and fences in good repair. There are other conditions. William Hitt is not to commit waste or suffer any to be done. If he works on the said tract more than 3 tithable hands besides himself, then an additional 100 pounds of tobacco will be added to the annual rent for each tithable above the limit of three. (Culpeper Co. Deed Records Y/85)

On June 26,1810 William Hitt of Fauquier Co. sold to Elijah Hitt of the same place for £30 all his interest in a tract of about 217 acres whereon his father John Hitt, dec'd, resided, it being near the Fauquier Courthouse and adjoining the lands of the late Capt. James Bell, Frank James, Wiley Roy and Charles Lee. Witnesses: Johnye Tongue, H. Barron, Thomas Puckett. Signed William Hitt. (Fauquier Co. Deed Records 17/799)
