Tillman served for over three years in the Revolutionary War. He first enlisted in 1778 in Fauquier County under Capt Leonard Helms and was stationed or fought at Red Stone (Ohio), and Illinois. He subsequently served under Capt. Bowman at St. Louis and Vincennes. The troops marched back to Virginia which took over eighteen months. In 1780 Tilman served under Capt. Weaver of Fauquier County, Virginia and served or fought with this regiment as far south as Williamsburg. In 1781 Tilman served under Capt. Ball at Richmond.
After the war, Tillman settled first in Culpeper County, Virginia where he married Dinah Hitt. After his marriage, Tilman moved to Kentucky and settled about three miles from Bryan's Station, where he built a hut for his family, who were living near Raven Creek.
Tillman and Dinah had 15 children. Tillman's children were all married in Kentucky and several of his sons served in the War of 1812. The Kempers belonged to the old School Baptist Church. Three of Tillman's children moved with him to Bryan's Station: Thomas, Anna, and Benjamin.
